Mine main hunting plase is San Carlos, Mexico - about the middle of Sea of Cortez. Visibility 30+ feet.
I usually scout the area and try to find the fish:
1. Grassy area with fish
2. Little sandy area in between the rocks.
If I spot several even small fishes in the grass - that means that bigger (read smarter) fish hangs around too and it is just hiding too well to notice from the surface. Then I drop down to the bottom and do 'indian' style. I do circle route and most often then not on my second dive on the same route I will spot the fish checking my first trail since I disturbed silt from the bottom.
In the sandy\rocky area fish is usually easy to spot from the surface so I turn around and dive behind the rocks slowly stick my head and gun over the rock and hang around untill suitalbe target appears whithin the range.
Less often I'm trying to find underwater canyon and swim up. If there is any fish it usually gets uncomfortable when pushed to the surface and it tryes to bolt pass me back to the deep waters. And then it is my 1 sec long chance to land it...
In my area fish often following divers so on occassion I turn belly up and continue to swim very slowly to let following fish gets into range. Main consern in this case - not to shoot yourself in the leg :blackeye
