Hey there! I'm a scuba instructor just getting into freediving, and have begun doing static practice sessions at home a few times a week. Quick question - is there an optimal position, with regards to ease of breathing and breath-holding, relaxation, etc? Lying down flat, slightly inclined, or something different?

when i do dry statics, i am lying down on my bed and try to relaxe all my muscels while i do a breath up. try to focus on your legs while you breath you will find yourself tensed. then when you think your legs and your face is completly relaxed you might be tensed again. it is really hard to find the 100% relaxacion. some people sit up while holding the breath. i prefer to lie down

I also prefer to lie down, if possible with my head resting on something.

as lucia says , make sure your neck is not tensed at all. you could put a towel under your neck.

I get a bit scared I'll pass out and my tongue will block my throat, is this possible?

I have done all my pb's while sitting cross legged, with my butt on a pillow. I cannot pack to the max (or even close) while lying down, due to the nature of the position. Plus, I can't handle strong contractions while lying down. I think there is a reason yogis sit cross legged---surely in my case it makes everything more comfortable, even though my back and neck and tensed.

I have a bit of a combination, which I know does not allow for max relaxation...but...I find it easier to lie down to relax, so I start my static lying. I spend most of the static lying on a couch or bed, but once the contractions start in ernest, like Eric said, I struggle lying down, so I do a kind of 'smooth transision' from lying to a seated position.

If I am going to pack, I do it in a sitting position, then lie on my side for the static. I find it difficult to even take a deep breath while lying on my back.

All my recent PBs have been done lying on my side.

@bluecape: i do the same way like you. the first phase till the breathing reflex comes i lyi down.
when the fight starts and the contractions get harder i sit up. cause then i don t rreally feel the contraction that hard.
@eric: okay you prefer to sit up because you get full with air easier. i realized the same. when i lay down on my bed, i do not get really full and packing is much harder you are right. i will find a new technique.
by the way i did my pb on static today. from 5:23 to 5:30 minutes. i am happy
