Any news about viz for today?Maybe the wind will be good for snorkeling at this evening

Sea's looking flat...and brown... I'll check it out as the tide comes in and let you know if it improves. But don't hold yr breath.

Hi all,

Just moved down south from Scotland due to relocation to do with my job. Currently near Portsmouth. Have done a fair bit around North Wales, as I'm originally from Warrington, but not much over the last year or so due to being in Scotland, I've been doing more scuba up there for the scallops and wrecks.

So basically I'm new to the area and 'The South', and after any one that I can possibly tag along with for some company and local knowledge. In return for some banter and crap jokes.

Cheers Karl

Still brown/ green, but with a day or two of calm weather it looks like it might be a milky ok. Maybe.

Looking through the last couple of pages doesnt sound like any ones had much luck in sussex this year. I bought a house a couple of mnths back that needs complete renovating so havent had much time to get to the beach, sounds like i picked a good year to do it though! Weathers cleared up a bit today, but would imagine it'll still be a couple of weeks till it really settles down enough to make a trip to the beach worth while.
On a different note, think im deinatly going to eastbourne pier and hastings pier on my dive list this year, both will have to be very early morning dives but if anyone else is keen let me know.

Hi Karl, welcome down south! Good to see that we've given you the warm and ringing welcome for which we southerners are so famous
Mate, much as I love banter and crap jokes, I'm afraid that probably the best advice I can give is to look west... I've only fished the solent a couple of times - the viz was shocking and the tide pulled like a river. Oh, and millions of boats. I may have been in crap places/ at bad times, but it didn't really leave me wanting more (having said that I had two nice sessions on the isle of wight - south and west sides).
Going east from Portsmouth you've got Bognor - I've been spearing there twice without huge success, but there are some cracking videos on youtube of spearos nailing nice bass and have a search back through previous years' sussex threads to find out more about the place. There may well be lots of other places (e.g. Selsey), but that's all a bit beyond my patch. If you keep coming east you end up in Brighton (my neck of the woods). I love it dearly, but...if you're going to spend that long in the car, why not go west to Dorset? Check out the Dorset thread and their catch reports...I'm not jealous. Honest.
Good luck and let us know how you get on, especially if you find anywhere half decent in the Solent!
Nick

I've been away quite a bit so might have missed some cracking days, but every time I've been down to the beach so far this year it's been unfishable...
Curiously, I've not seen any mullet in the marina yet this year. There are normally a few monsters nosing around the boats, but none so far. Though last week I helped a mate move his boat to Chichester and there were some there - perhaps they've not come east yet.
Good luck with the house and for sure, I could be up for an Eastbourne dive (though if we have as few diveable days this year as last I might be a bit more reluctant).

First dive of the season! Viz was about 0.5m near the shore (I wasn't expecting much but wanted to get in) but pleased to find it open up to about 2m, possibly even 3m in patches. Trouble with Newhaven is the viz plummets as you dive down near the shore, so no luck looking for flatties. No fish seen (I really do mean none). Water temp is still a bit brutal, so I stayed in for about an hour and a half I guess.

Despite not seeing anything, I really enjoyed it. The sun was out and it felt so good to get back in the water again.

Anglers on the beach had caught a scorpion fish - never seen one of those before.

When do the fish arrive? ;-)

Nice one David! When do the fish turn up? Don't know but hopefully sooner than last year! Checking last year's forum wwc_gang bagged the first fish (bass) on 10 May and then it was you with the flattie and pollack on 28 May...

Yeah, I seem to remember that last year felt like it 'got going' in June. Looking forward to May and the spiders. I was a touch surprised to not see a single fish - no baby pollack, no wrasse and no bait fish. Starfish aren't in either yet (not that they appear on my menu). Apart from the mussels, limpets and Barnacles there wasn't any life. Maybe I should have called myself BassBoy and things would be different? Looking forward to a dive with you Nick - you may even get me to that dangerous and haunted place you speak of sometimes.

Thanks for the reply.

I have looked at Dorset but Swanage seems to be the closest place and that's around 2 hours away. I quite fancy Brighton, looking around on the net the sunken pier looks interesting however lots of people say to give it a wide berth as its dangerous? Is parking as bad as everyone makes out, looks a long walk? Also has any one dived at Selsey before, I know its a popular dive spot so didnt want to go around upsetting people there ?

Cheers Karl
