Sussex report 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I dived yesterday, on a local wreck and had about 12ft viz we were approximately 2 miles out. I caught my first bass of the year and a couple of bream. I was able to you my new OMER cayman carbon 110, which faired very well indeed, I would certanily recommend it to anyone who was looking at getting a long gun. The chances of using it though in Sussex will be very few and far between. Should also say that the water seems to have got a bit warmer.

regards Kev

i dived the palace pier today with a freind who was on scuba, vis was not very good, probs two meters at the best. saw a few wrasse, found a flatfish and missed him 3 times and he escaped, i have no idea how but oh well.
why is the water so green at the moment, its been calm but doea not seem to be clearing, is this to do with the may bloom.

Tried Newhaven breakwater again , vis about 0.5m , no fish , had a quick look at Brighton did not bother to go in , this is getting a bit boring . One plus the temp' is now 11 degrees , maybe vis will improve soon .

i know devondave, the vis is crap everywhere dont know why its so bad, i remember last time this year there was some good vis, so far this year its been rubbish!
i am getting fed up with diving water with a 1meter vis.
but also yes the water definanlty feels warmer, i saw lots of people swimming in the sea today and yesterday without wetsuits.

Just go to be patient!

Might be o.k this coming weekend. The water is not going to clear until the wind goes offshore to create a surface current drawing all the sediment out to sea. Light winds won't help. We need a good north-north easterly - Force 3-4

Josh,Devon Dave, our cost line is most effected by east, south eatererly winds, when the wind is from this direction you will not be able to get in and fish the shore marks that you go too. Our coast will hold westerly and southerly winds too a degree but the best wind for us is the northerely, ne, n, nw. The other thing to remember that you are fishing very popular marks
(made even more popular by the internet.) You might have a good catch every now and then but these marks are being hammered. May bloom will arrive but I have not seen a lot of evidence of it yet, just the wrong winds creating bad viz. Wait for the wind to change and go and fish somewhere else, its a very steep learning curve, but when you do find a good spot, keep QUITE about it. Not trying to leacture just don't want to see you get to down about the lack of fish and viz.

Captain J / KWM , thanks for your insight & input , to be honest not too down it is still early after all . KWM your comments about trying new sites and not giving away the good ones ring true , I do like to share info' about nice spots but perhaps an open forum is not the best place to do it :naughty . Hoping for a North wind , cheers Dave :) .

Get out to sea a bit we were just 800 mts out last night on a bit of rough ground and had 20ft viz off Brighton, your getting very little inshore viz due to the easterly swell. No fish worth shooting last night just hundred,s of bass about 700 gms mixed with a huge shoal of small bream. Stand on the prom and you can see the clear blue viz line.

really, thanks eric aqua, i saw the clear blue line past the murk, where abouts did you dive last night, dont worry just a genreral idea, i wont ask for your good spots, so the better vis is a bit further out at the moment, where you diving from the marina or brighton/hove beaches.
i am planning on going tommorow so i am gonna swim futher tommorow and hopefully get some good vis, hehe.

Hey there everyone. Just woke up from winter hibernation. WHATZ UUUUUPPPP????
Is it worth travelling from London to brighton tomorrow for spearfishing????
Q.Why do woman always watch porn to the very end?
A. They want to know if they get married.

Hi pisces how are u ? Im yet to go in iv just recieved my new gear so cant wait to try it . Ill meet up with u if u do decide to come down high tide is at about 3 ish i will probably head to newhaven about that time just let me know. im not sure about vis but might be worth a go.

hey vis is amazing pices, i dived today at the palace pier and the west pier and it was easily 4 meters if not 5 in places, well worth coming down for.
today i saw lots of smallish bass but some up to probably 3 pounds, but could not get a shot in, saw a few mullet, wrasse, and lots and lots of flatfish, ended up with 6 flatfish. all the bass and mullet were very wary of me hehe and kept there disatnce, but i also saw some garfish one of which swam right up to me and had a look haha.
a really good day should still be very good tommorow as the winds are still down.
if your off to newhaven i might see you down there unless you decide to dive the piers, lots of fish at the piers at the moment.

kev quick question you know you said the omer caymen gun can fire off target sometimes, well i know what you mean, missed a bass at point blank range today which was annoying, have you found a way to solve this i have made it closed muzzle which has helped a bit but not that much, have you found a way to solve this?

cool what time you thinking of going, i wanted to dive the west pier my freind who is on scuba will be going, but would be good to have someone else spearfishing going though he just go's underwater and i dont see him for 45 mins haha, do you want to dive the west pier at high tide tommorow let me know and i will arrange a time to meet, saw lots of bass there today so probably the best place to go, if you cant make it then i will try to get to newhaven as i did want to try it on a better day.
thanks josh

Ill try at newhaven at about 2.00 see what its like if its crap ill go to Brighton, i just cant stand looking for a parking space down the seafront ,what do u do for parking?

Iv got your number when were u thinking of going to the pier ill call u see where u are (if your not already in the water)

Never dive the same spot 2 days in a row, shot or scared fish leave a chemical signature in an area for at least three or four tides making new fish coming into a area very spooky. Do your self a favour read some of the early Hans Hass books some of the Southsea Island people knew more about fish than any of todays so called experts. I was fishing the Jennys last night the area is covered in small mussels and plaice up to 3.5 kilo were caught in the nets last week.

huntfish if you are willing to pay for parking, then you can park on the seafront for 1 pound an hour and its like 1 min from beach and theres almost allways a space somewhere nearby, my freind does this and it works well.
yeah i am gonna dive as much as possible tommorow and make the most of the good weather and the time off, haha

i have heared of the jennys but have no clue where it is and i heared you need a boat.

its gonna be hightide at aboout 2 i think, dont know if thats good for newhaven or not, anyone?
do you not want to dive the pier? have you ever caught much at newahaven huntfish?
