Re: - Sussex Report 2009 -

hi guys
first post for me!
im still a pretty inexperienced spearo
never speared in uk water just philippines
im based in kent and would love to come down to sussex and give it a go there
any charter boats operating for individuals? how deep are the grounds? im confident in getting down to about 15 feet. is this good enought for any spots shore/boat in the area?
shore spots are probably best for me any safe areas with a close to predictable rip?
anything i need to know safety wise in uk waters? markers etc...
thanks guys!

Hello Mikey, welcome to db.
Diving in Sussex is a bit different to the Philippines, colder, less vis' etc.
We have a number of good shore diving sites ranging from Seaford down to Bognor.
I think it's a good idea to fish next to some kind of structure or rocks when learning or trying new places, then you have somewhere to haul out or hang on to if you get tired and also hide from boat traffic.

Somewhere like the outside of the breakwater at Newhaven or the pier at Brighton, both provide shelter and are fairly safe.

Have a trawl through the previous Sussex threads for some other ideas.
Feel free to ask any questions you like, see you around the forum and maybe on the coast.

Dave.

Hi all - forgive me if you've already read my similar post on the Cornwall forum, but I've just been reading here with great surprise and interest that Bognor of all places seems to be quite hot for spearfishing. Used to live there myself many moons ago, had no idea that it had any fishing potential, other than watching blokes from Pagham Drinking Club take small boats out to the 3 mile marker and catch things from down deep with rod & line...

Anyway, I'm back down under now (New Zealand - spearo heaven!
icon_smile.gif
), but will be returning to the UK from this June for a coupla months of relation-spotting (wife's family
icon_confused.gif
), and by the sound of it we're going to be back in Bognor for a while. But I am absolutely not gonna be allowed to bring my gun, fins and (especially!) weights over to the UK with me though, unless it's on a one-way basis - we have a serious shitload of shopping to bring home at the end of the trip, judging by the lists that are being made by the boss!

So are there any places in Sussex where I can rent spearo gear? Or indeed, anyone with a bit of spare gear they could rent/lend me? I'll be more than happy to reciprocate (and take you out in our boat in the Bay of Islands for some awesome spearo action) if you're coming over this way in September to see the All Blacks win the world cup :blackeye...

Hello Billy.
Don't think you'll find anywhere to rent spearo gear, in fact here in the UK we're a bit short on spearo shops full stop.
Bognor can be a good spot, it's certainly a nice reef, although very shallow.
The problem is, to get to the outer reef, which you need to if the inner reef isn't fishing well, it is a fair old swim.
Now I use a kayak to reach it.
Give me a shout when you're over, I have spares of almost everything except fins, I gave my spare fins away, but I do have spare scuba fins.
June can be a good month, just when the reef starts to 'come alive'.

The other point is - the forum is pretty quiet at this time of year & you will probably get more response nearer the date.

Thanks Devondave, that's awesome - really appreciate the offer. Maybe I'll manage to slide the fins into the luggage somewhere when the boss isn't looking...

Re getting out to outer reefs etc, dunno if y'all do it/have tried it in the UK, but there's a few of us using stand up paddleboards for this now in NZ. Sooo much better than kayaks! It works really well; we strap a big old crate to the back of the board, and that holds weights, fins etc, along with drinking water and an ice cooler for the catch - and off you go. Not only is it a much more stable platform for sorting yourself out on than a kayak, from the standing position you also have a much better view down into the depths, to actually see what's down there. As you can also get some awesome inflatable paddleboards now (we use a British brand, Red Air), the whole package packs away into the boot of your car real easy, so it can be taken anywhere, no drama. (And a shitload lighter than a kayak to carry around).

And the paddleboard then obviously becomes your float, too. Stick the diving flag onto the top of the crate, and off you go. There's only a tiny bit more drag than with a normal float. You can get yourself out to some real interesting places like this. If you want I'll stick some pix up of our set-up, so you can see how it all goes together and how well it works.

Out of interest, been trying to remember - is it the Mixon; the bank off Selsey that gets uncovered at low tide? Any fish out there? I guess it's pretty tidal so it'd only be a small window of opportunity at high/low tide or whatever.

Hey Billy, yes please show us some pictures of your SUP setup!! :)
I've been looking at doing this for a while now - the yak is great for a day trip, but for a couple of hours it would be miles easier using a SUP.
I had a look around the London boat show this year - there were quite a few SUPs there to look at, including an inflatable one. but the glass/foam ones look better (lighter) IMO unless space is a real issue. The main downside is that fitting a fishfinder isnt quite so easy and i LUURVE my FF on the yak :)
Pictures and stories please :)

I dont mean to intrude, but I also have some questions about summer spearing in sussex,Were comming over from Norway to visit family in Seaford in late june/early july. And I will be able to bring most of my kit,but not my lead,is there anywhere in the area that might rent out lead? Im onely in my second season spearing, so I havent got that many good spots to "trade" though.
I have an aida one star and C.M.A.S 3star freedivercertificate. And I usually spear in the 10-15meter range, and would be forever grateful if somebody would let me tag along on a underwater adventure...

If you post again nearer the time, I'm sure someone will help you out.
I pop down as often as I can during the summer, unfortunately the south Coast is at the mercy of the weather as far as visibility is concerned, East wind will kill it for example.
There is a dive shop in Newhaven near West Beach, but I have no idea if they would rent-out weights.
If you are around when I'm down I'll be glad to meet up for a dive, (I have spare weights.)
A lot of the sites are easy to find and accessible from the shore, if you do end up going on your own.

OK, give me a coupla days and I'll get some piccies etc. Just quickly though, the reason we use Red Air inflatables SUPs is that they're pretty much indestructible - if you're working along a rocky cliff line or whatever, or around any structure where your board is likely to be banging against the side, you absolutely don't want to be using a solid board - a) it gets shredded by the barnacles etc, and b) it makes a lot more noise. Whereas the Red Airs just bounce off. Also, they sit higher on the water than solid boards, so they create less drag for towing around. Plus of course they're half the price of a solid board, and actually a whole lot more fun anyway. SUP is actually my business over here in NZ, we run a SUP school and training company, so we've got all the options to play with, and there's just no question that the Red Airs make the best spearo platform.

Anyway, I'll be back shortly with full SUP/Spearo report!

Ok I will defenetly be back closer to the time Im there, but for diving alone,I do it alot here in Norway, but Im not too shure about solo diving in "foreign" waters.According to my innlaws there is lethal undercurrents that will suck you down and over to france before you know it!:t Ive spent quite alot of time and energy explaining that people actually go spearing in these waters and that they do return to the shore aswell...

Hello everyone,
I'm looking for someone to dive with in the brighton area, anyone fancy meeting up? I would feel better diving with a buddy! Im a student at Sussex uni, living on campus, sick of the vegetarian food my house mates are always cooking up, would love to spear a few fish.
Got gear but no car, I'm keen!
Josh

Yesterday I spoke with a guy in a dive shop at the Brighton Marina, he says the algal blooms are here and vis will be bad for the next three weeks.
Anybody been in the water recently? what was the vis like? I'm going to have to have a look myself I think, don't fancy waiting three weeks.

Unfottunately this thread is not the liveliest mate, but good luck finding some visibility...

I've been diving around Exeter for about a year and a half, expecting to be moving back to Sussex in around 2 months, so looking forward to checking out whats good where, only compared to the Devon thread this seems very quiet!!! Anyone caught anything in Sussex... ever...?!

Any info would be good info, I haven't got a clue where to go as yet. Will be based near Tunbridge Wells
