Sussex Spearing 2011

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Thanks for the top tip Spaniard - currently on holiday in...Spain, so will try to pick up some recipes!

Bob i would love to go for a hunt with you, I am in Devon atm but i will be back in Brighton area from October. I will PM then. Cheers Josh

Bognor = Reef = look in the holes and cracks = Bass. For some reason this part of the coast offers excellent bass fishing but they are found in the holes / caves / cracks, like Newhaven.

Hi Spaniard,

How's Newhaven for spearing in general? I'm just starting out (just ordered my first gun!) and being based in Sussex, I've identified Newhaven as a possible spot (along the breakwater thing and, from Google maps, what looks like a reef to the west of that breakwater).

David

Hi David, i've only dived the breakwater arm (outer side) which is made up of lots of big boulders. At certain spots along the length of the arm you can expect to see bass in the holes / caves / cracks which form part of the underwater boulder terrain. It is easy to get to as you can park very near and enter the water via beach. The main challenge is the guys rod-fishing along the length of the arm - diplomacy is the best way here. Try and find spots where they are not fishing and acknowledge them if you have to swim under their lines. The last time I fished it I helped one guy retrieve his weight and hook etc.which were snagged on a rock. Good luck.

The anglers are banned from the breakwater now.

Hi,

Thanks - sounds good...except for the bass hiding in caves! I should be getting my first ever speargun today (can't wait!) so look forward to checking it out. How often do you fish there? From Google maps, it looks like there may be a reef to the west of that breakwater...might be worth a swim out to it. I wonder if the bass are in more open water there?

Hi Devondave,

Really? Why? Does that bode badly for spearing there (next on the ban list) or was it some other reason?

PS Love your kayak setup - I'd love to get one of those...the thought of hot tea and cake mid spear session sounds rather good and the ability to get to areas without good beach access...got to start saving!!!! :)

Are you down Newhaven way ever? Being a beginner, I'm keen to go out with a few more experienced people.

When I say 'caves' it's really just the 'openings' created between the boulders. You won't have to swim deep or swim inside them, a good torch is handy. I haven't been there for a few years so hopefully someone else can update on recent trips :)

Hi all been off the radar for a couple of years hads a little boy so no time to dive and all that . been in a few times this year mainly Newhaven and seems to be really fruitfull this year, if anyone wants to meet up for a dive send me a post.

Sorry, should have been more specific.
The breakwater is closed to everyone, some safety thing maybe.
Some jobsworth gave me a bollocking for climbing up the wall and walking along it last year.

Spaniard - Thanks. I'll no doubt give it a go sometime soonish so will let you know.

Huntfish - I'll PM you when I'm heading off there - should be in the next month of so. I've got a couple of weekends booked in Dorset first.

Devondave - Phew. OK, so good for spearos! Re jobsworth...I was whistled at in a pool for crossing an imaginary line in the water (gradually shelving pool) because I was holding one of my kids in a buoyancy jacket (therefore a non swimmer)....I was up to my waist...holding a child in a buoyancy jacket?!?!!?! What did he expect next? That I'd slip, fall on my kid, be unable to get up, therefore killing us both (and possibly 10 others)?!?!! The people who think up these 'safety' rules should be put on a island...a long long way away.

Devondave what kayak do you use I'm in the hunt for one but not sure what length to get , I'm looking at a tarpon 100 .

I've got a Malibu mini x, the only reason I bought it was because it's 3m long and fits in the van.
Not sleek and slimline, but very stable.

I failed once again to fish Bognor... Spring tide = uber strong tidal stream. Had to turn back after a couple of hundred yards or I'd have ended up on the isle of Wight... To be continued!

In the meantime, made up for it with two nice bass in Brighton before work this morning. Great way to start the day!

Hey Guys,

I recently moved to Haywards Heath and am keen to explore the local spots, especially the infamous Bognor reefs. I only started out in the spring and all of my diving so far has been in Dorset. I have a pretty hectic schedule but am free most Sundays and would be keen for some early morning dives.

It would be great to keep this thread updated with trip reports and any opportunities to meet up.

Cheers,
Dan

Hi Silverbullet,

I'm about 10mins away from you and also keen to check out the Sussex area. There seem to be a few of us so we should get some meets together. I'm totally new to spearing (just been out for second time in Dorset where the in-laws live).

What do you mean by early morning dives? Are you talking 5am loony stuff? :t

Hi BarnacleBoy,

By early morning I mean in time for me to get back to HH for 11am start at work. So maybe an 8am dive!? No loony stuff.

Just been reading your post about Worbarrow, sounds like you're just as enthusiastic and wanting to progress as me. I'll keep an eye on the wind and give you a shout when I'm next thinking of heading out in the Brighton area.

Alright gents? I'd be happy to show you around my 'hood (Brighton), or at least the bits I know - I've only been fishing for just over a year, but do know a couple of spots. I'm away quite a bit, but when I'm around am always keen for a dive - let me know. Oh, and loony o'clock makes parking much easier...

Cool this sounds good.

Silverbullet - Yeah, dead keen! So, you need to be back at 11am on Sundays too?

bobandsausage - Cool, I'd def be up for some dives. When I'm back from Dorset I'll check the diary and let's try and get a dive sorted. I know a couple of others on the forum (Spearo Si and another) are keen to try out the sussex underwater landscape too, so we can try a few spots (Newhaven?)
loony o'clock - I like that phrase :D
