Swim Training Programme - get yourself back into shape

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Hi Ofer,

You're right, those monofin clips were amazing. They are unbelievable athletes. I'm going to look into a monofin; it looks like a lot of fun, and good training as well. Let me know how you like the short fins.

Best regards,
Dan

Hi Dan!
It does look like a lot of fun, and it is, too - but a word of caution is in place:
simple as it may look, monofin swimming is very very difficult to master & takes lots and lots of practice. I'm just at the very beginning of this road: looking at videos, getting tips from more advanced divers & lots of trial and error (all fun, I must say!). I started another thread here (
http://forums.deeperblue.net/forum15/thread64685.html)
that details my monofin learning curve, and some very valuable advice given to me by DB members. You are very welcome to share in it.

I've got the short fins - will try them out tonight - can't wait :p till this workday is over!

Best regards,
:) Ofer

Hi Ofer,

Thanks for providing the link to the monofin thread; it was very informative and interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed your description of the first time you used your monofin; very humorous, but also enlightening. I'm definitely going to make the investment in one, and will heed your advice to practice, practice, practice. There was also some very good, insightful information on the thread that I'll try to put into practice.

Have you ever used yours in open water?

Best regards,
Dan

Hi Dan!
I'm glad you like the mono thread - it's getting to be really useful, and I have more in mind to put up there (just need the time to get it done). There's lots more mono info floating around in DB, just search for it. I haven't taken my mono to sea yet - just looking at the sea and craving for it. The winter sea is the best around here, but I must get a proper suit if I want to last a meaningful length of time in the water - I'm working on it. That, and buddying up with some people.
BTW, I tried the short fins in the pool & they were great for warmup/cooldown - will definitely invest in a pair ASAP.
Good luck with the mono thing!
:) Ofer

For the past week I've been on a totally different training program. It's called the "Stomach Flu" workout program/diet.:(

I don't get to spend a lot of time in the pool to work on technique, but my abs are getting a workout.:yack The food portion consists of whatever you can hold in. :mute

I hoped to be back to swimming again this week, but we'll have to see as my wife now has it too.

Awww, what a bummer, Jon! :head
Just try to drink lots of warm liquids, in really small portions if necessary - fresh ginger & a bit of lemon can help to keep it all down. Hope you all get well soon!

I hope you feel better soon. Doesn't sound like my kind of workout. ;) :(

A few days ago I was working on 'Flu Apnea'. This is when my nose is blocked and I can't breathe through my mouth, so I get a lot of static training done. The penalty for breathing through my mouth is a chest infection. A whole night of this is truly awful. Now I'm on antibiotics, and feeling much better.

My swimming has improved - I did 2000m in an hour. I'll try again soon. :)

Seems like winter is taking its toll all over the place - I feel like my own flu is considering a return visit (throat feels funny & energy's low) so yesterday's and probably tomorrow's pool sessions are scrapped :( . Drinking tons of hot lemon & gargling all sorts of strange stuff, I hope to weather it out somehow.

Well done on the 2000 m/hr, Lucia! Just take care to get really well before you're back in the pool - this is where patience always pays!

Today I went for a swim, I was planning on doing lengths, but there was nobody else in the deep end and it was too good an opportunity to miss. :D

I did some duck-dives, i.e. sinus flooding, as I didn't have a mask or nose clip. Good training though! :cool:

Here is my swimming routine just as something to mix it up.

Warmup:
400 crawl start out
* short pause
100 dolphin kick
100 back kick
100 frog kick
100 flutter kick
100 dolphin kick
* short pause
sometimes I put in a 200 crawl with a pull buoy if I have one here.

Pick up the pace. This should all be done fast.

400 IM (Butterfly, Back, Breast, Free) (when I am out of shape like these days I can only do about 35m butterfly and then I finish it with just kick, alternativly 1 stroke for every 4 kicks)
* short pause
200 Freestyle
* short pause
4 x 100 sprint 30 second recover or base it on a lap time.

Cool down: This should be done fairly relaxed

100m slow mixed strokes
4 x 50m underwater swims (these days at this point I cannot do 50m underwater so you go for a little more than half a pool length, slow swim to the end and then 30 seconds recover)
50m slow mixed stroke

I like this as a mix, drop stuff out if you need to. The leg work is nice, I don't like kick boards that much (only really useful for flutter kick) and just practice hands out position.

I like practicing a variety of strokes as well.

Cool. I'll try that variation.. off to Spain tomorrow for a week and when i get back i am resuming pool training. Thanks for posting that.

Isnt it hard counting all those kicks?

I left off the units :duh!

All numbers are in Meters. I swim at a 50m pool so

50m = 1 length
100m = 1 lap

When swimming I think of everything in laps, but when talking about swimming I talk about everything in meters for no good reason.

I wonder why it seems that all the folks in the pool that do like 300m variations and a rest are the same people running around holding their shoulders all the time :)
