Sydney Freedivers was moved out of their usual pool a couple of months ago. The pool management deemed apnea to be an insurance risk. This was a difficulty the our club and other freedivers training in the area didn't need.
However we took it in our stride and in the last few months we have established small training groups in many swimming pools around Sydney. Some months ago Sydney Freedivers had training occuring in 3 swimming pools in Sydney. We now have training in 8 pools.
The club leveled off in numbers as we didn't have a venue that we could introduce new people and do safety training, nor a venue where we could gather as a club and do max or static nights etc.
The expansion of the sport of freediving in Australia is part of our club purpose so we could not accept this new development. With some good work from Ant Judge we established a new venue for the club. The club now trains at the NSW Sports and Recreation, Academy of Sports one night a week.
We visited the centre to check out the pool and facilities. The staff were impressed with our safety protocols and with the fact that we were a fully insured non-profit sporting club we were given the go ahead.
This gives us the venue to introduce new people and cater for our big swim nights and static nights. The pool is not a public pool so we do not have to share with swimmers nor worry about them copying our activities.
Here is a pic
Phew... once again the club is growing. We had 2 new members sign up last week and 3 new people come to the introduction training.
