Take a phone spearing!

Ok that's an odd title your probably thinking.....but I'm serous!

All the regular sea dogs are probably away of something called an aqua pack. This is a water proof case that stores your phone. Designed for those moments when your excitement gets the best of you on that specimen fish and, plop, there goes your Nokia 13533# with a camera wireless internet and bilt in ass scratcher.

Now its common sense to take a phone on a boat for safety reasons but why not take one spearfishing????

I simple tie mine to the float. So in invent of becoming swept out to sea I can call the cost guard and order a pizza.

One thing I recommend is to take the aqua pack on a trial swim. Instead of putting a phone inside fill it with tissue paper. At the end of the dive you will know if the pack is fully water proof. Just remember to dry off before checking the tissue paper.
Its also worth using a good quality aqua pack rather then a cheepy.

Ortlieb has a very good name for their waterproof equipment and I often use my bike bags as dry transportation on the lake. They do stay dry even when dipped under water.

I use an Aquapac for my phone. It does sit lashed to the top of my bodyboard float mind so althoug it gets splashed I've not dunked it yet. I don't rely on a phone for help (not that I carry anything else - flares, radio) because you really need a flat sea or be able to land somewhere to use it or it'll likely end up in the drink!

That said, I've not tried making a call while it's still in the case. I may have (your Honour) accidentally leant on the keypad and pressed some buttons and been put through to the 999 call centre on one occasion as I could hear someone saying 'hello' (I thought it was mermaids!). So I guess it might work.

I've bought an Aquapac for my phone about a year ago, when I started writing the Apnea Training Manager (ATM). I wanted to run the software on my cell phone, because I was bored and distracted with watching the timer during various static and dynamic tables and other exercises. I need something that can be programmed, that can calculate and time the tables automatically, and preferably with a big display that can be seen underwater even with goggles on (unlike my Mosquito display) or maybe even without them, and possibly with a sound output. The cell phone in a Aquapac was ideal and cheap solution.

Unfortunately before I managed to finish the ATM (and its cell phone version that is still in works), my cell phone was stolen, and the new one does not fit into the Aquapac, so I'll have to get a new one.

i wouldnt take the phone with me... it adds stress (checking missed calls, getting an sms from your boss etc...), and one of the main benefits of spearfishing is that i only think about looking for and catching fish... no place for a phone there...

You know, I'm really glad to see this thread! My biggest concern with diving is that 'out of touch' feeling. I need my cell-phone - preferably with a waterproof headset or at least an underwater alarm on my float so I don't miss any of those super-important calls which, when I really think about it, are all about who I am. Without constant communication under ALL CIRCUMSTANCES I feel my personal reality will cave in on itself. How else will I know who I am? And I really must know who I am at every moment - and, as we all know - that comes from other people. I'd also like to have an underwater radio - so I don't miss any important news items - why just the other day I was 20 meters down taking a picture of a gestating walleye and all I could think about was poor Paris Hilton! And what on earth is going on with Britney? How selfish is it for me to be off diving without a care in the world when these hard working celebrities are out there giving their all for me? And what about Georg Bush? and Iraq? and Food and clothes and cars and gas prices and weather and panda bears and 60-year-old women having babies and funny dogs and a drunk guy in a wheelchair and blown-up-children and vitamins that do or don't work and viagra and oprah and fucking american idle.

Yah - gimme my phone!!!

Another good use of a cell phone would be one with integrated GPS - you could then mark the locations of your favorite diving spots, or get easier to spots with known coordinates (i.e. wrecks) in locations that you are not too familiar with.

My waterproof container is a product of The South African army. My old man was in the army, so I got these neat plastic cases for gun shells, that are 100% waterproof and nearly indestructable. I actually reversed my car over one just to test it!. They Work well for keys, phones (not that I'd like to take it out when I'm out in the water) or even a bar of chocolate (essential after a long time in the salty water).

you could always get a Casio GzOne phone (somewhat waterproof to 1m for 30min), and put it in your Float Pocket for emergencies. I take My motorola V3x phone inside an Otterbox 1000, fits perfectly, and keeps the phone dry at the surface- but I wont use it unless I am out and dry, or for a rare emergency, dont think you can dive with aphone in an otterbox, that would be pretty stupid, but it held tight with Car Keys at 60 feet without a leak.

Personally If I am fishing, I dont want to deal with a phone call, Ill be home when I say Ill be home, if I am going to be late, I can opt to call.

Swimming to a GPS position from shore makes less sense than with a Boat unless you are really in unfamiliar territory and dont have boat access without local people to ask. I think a small Sounding device for depth on the float makes more sense so you can find your preferred fishing depth, or perhaps a small fish finder on the float (isnt this cheating?). but always remember that good sense and and an adventurous spirit is all that is really needed to fish successfully.

when it comes to GPS locations, dont you think that special digits, for example, the pinnacles of certian islands, would be protected and guarded by the people who know them (local fishermen with a consciencious mindset), and used only to guide paying Sport fishermen, rather than freely dispersed on the internet. I suppose there would be nothing wrong with logging your own special locations to return to, but things start sliding into the grey area if you start sharing that information with everyone you know of going to those destinations. sure maby one or two people, but keep in mind that the most frequented areas become over fished somehow or another, and sharing GPS locations will undoubetly contribute to that dilemma sooner or later.
I work with GIS and GPS and Plot out all of the Pinnacles of my location using NOAA'a bathymetry data, you can do the same for most all areas that have been measured and plotted, but sharing this information openly is a bit unorthodox for fishermen who wish to preserve their local fisheries, so dont ask me please, I wont know what you are talking about.
