Take a phone spearing!

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
roflAgreed, brill thread.

Jimy, are you sure you're not phone a addict (texting while spearing would be a dead give away)?

A year of so ago, a spearo (I think American) described using a largish, clear dry bag to hold his phone, car keys, wallet, etc. - being a large bubble, the dry bag also acted as his main spearo float.

I got an aqua pack for kayaking. It's a little bigger than needed - so I added a piece of foam, so if there is a small leak the phone won't necessarily get wet. Originally I used an old phone with a disposable SIM card - but the pack seems good (need to make sure all those little holes & pegs line up properly). I think it would destroy the mood for me if it rang ...but, having read Pastor's post, if it attracks the Bass - hey!:D (I'm thinking of attaching treble hooks to it now!).

Love the condom suggestion -- sounds like somebody went on one of those Ray Mears/SAS survival courses ("101 things to do with a condom" - not including the obvious one). Which type works best -- ribbed or strawberry flavour?!

Re. the waterproof phone, I told a Nokia employee from Finland the story about a colleague who unknowingly had his new Motorola cellphone dunked in a pint of beer by a jealous team member...he never did figure out why the phone never worked properly after that trip. The Nokia employee pulled out his latest phone, handed it to me and said, deadpan "This one's beer-proof." Now that's what I call a feature:cool:

Condom idea sounds cool, my only concern is that I don't know of any condoms that are completely dry, like lube-free! I not so keen on lubing my phone.

rofl rofl rofl Why not a bit of extra lube makes for easy slide action ;)

Don't know the situation in Capetown, but I know the colleges in SoCal seem to try to prevent sex by handing out free condoms that are the driest, most uncomfortable things in the world....seriously, covered with talc and made out of 5mil painter's plastic, which now that is has been mentioned, are the perfect underwater phone tote.....

Promote save sex or prevent it completely... Seems to me like the latter with that description rofl rofl

My waterproof container is a product of The South African army. My old man was in the army, so I got these neat plastic cases for gun shells, that are 100% waterproof and nearly indestructable. I actually reversed my car over one just to test it!. They Work well for keys, phones (not that I'd like to take it out when I'm out in the water) or even a bar of chocolate (essential after a long time in the salty water).

Do you happen to know the military name or code of what you're using? They may be available through surplus markets. I'm having a tough time imagining a reusable waterproof container made for one shell.

A mate of mine, Covert here on DB, has like a lunchbox type thing thats waterproof tied to his float. He takes his phone, car keys and a few other necesities with him...

lol i live in south africa if i dont take it with me someone else definitly will :p

Speaking off takeing stuff tied to them...has anone ever tried tieing a kayak to them and doing a drift?

Well I' not sure what 'doing a drift is'? The kreef season is just around the corner and when we go diving it's quite a shlep cos each of us dive with two belly bags full of crayfish plus four sets of bait bags, ropes and floats. ANd in soetwater we swim out pretty far like 400-600 out and spend about two to four hours out in the water. It gets quite tireing. We always see huge fish, but never bring a speargun cos it's not worth the effort dragging it through the kelp. Some guys use tube but the tube tends to be more effort than it's worth. What I want to do is to kit a paddleski out for diving. It would serve as a float. It will have live wells where i can keep crayfish and fish in, places where i can clip or strap my gun to it. It can have extra gear on it like a spare snorkel & mask. It would be much quiker than swiming and will probally glide over the kelp easier than i can swim through it. When i'm tired i could climb on to it and rest. Heck I could pack a lunch and eat it out on the sea!

Hey Lenny, how does Soetwater look fish wise. I drove past there on sunday and it looks like it can be quite promising...
What type of fish and what size do you normally get??

Fish are pretty good! I have seen some monsterous hotties! We always catch really nice gallie on the rod there as well. People have told me about steenbrass and kob but I have only seen hotties, catsharks and bronzies.

General viz?? It looks like it mite have quite a few sandbars but a few good reefs running out too... Also are you allowed to spear there? Is it not a MPA area? Sorry about all the questions :) O and whats a good wind for that area?

if you have to take something that is a phone, get a Casio GZone and use it anytime wihout worring about it. No I dont have one, but it would be a good idea. where I live we dont go alone so no floating off in the current problems that cant be resolved, but if something goes wrong you have fast contact to assistance. and if something goes right you can gloat to your buddies!!!
but fishing etiquette should dictate that you keep the phone off till you need it.
(honey!.....prepare the marinade I got a big one!!)LOL JK.

personally I would rather bring a small digital camera for proof of the one that was landed, and leave the phone in the float.

DT wanna go check it out on sunday?

i often see it really clean there.....wouldnt mind checking it out sometime, lots of kreef there and people catch them as well as fish often so i dont see it being protected.

Yup you allowed to spear there. Day entrance fee is R8 per person. It's the only place where you can still braai on the beach!!! which is partly why i love it so much. Cos my kreefing buddy gets his kids to see to the fire while we are in the water so that there's lekker boerewors rolls when we get out.(yum) Also it's real cheap to camp there, R60 per site. not that there are any sites, you can put your tent anywhere you want, so generally it means R60 per tent, reagardless to it's size or the number of people you fit in it! It is a gem, I can't believ more people don't know about it! As far as diving is concerned. I think if you want nice hottie I recommend you enter at a point right near the lighthouse called 'Die Anker' (its got hot showers when you get out the water, which is always a plus in the cold atlantic). You will need to swim right to the back of the kelp, and there should be some biggies there. With a bit of luck you might see a gallie. (When does their season close?) Unfortunately Soetwater does'nt always have the best viz, But I think the same ihes true for just about any spot along the atlantic side . I think its a mild North Westerly you want (I can't quite remember, so don't quote me). When it is clear, it is beautiful! I used to kreef diving there where viz is not so important. But 95 percent of the time it was good enough to see the kreef from 2m. Also if you get in and find the water dirty swim out 50m more before you turn around. Often the water is dirty in front and crystal clear at the back or vice versa depending on where you are, in relation to the sand banks. Although most of the fish you tend to find in these sandy clearings in the kelp. I really wish I could go with you! but when season opens I will be back their fairly reguarily!
