The Andaman islands might be good, not sure how/if the tsunami affected them though, might be worth checking.
Lakkadive islands sounds more descriptive to me than hundred thousand islands.The name of the archipelago literally means hundred thousand islands (laksha = one hundred thousand, dweep = island). Until 1973, the island group was known by the Anglicized name Laccadives (compare to Maldives, Sanskrit name Maladweepa).

If you're already going to south India, Sri-lanka should have some good (and lethal in the wrong spots) surf so I heard. Waves coming from antarctica with nothing in between... Diving can't be bad either.
