Is it possible for a free diver to get The Benz ??

The situation would be probably caused by accelerated accent from a resonable depth?

Cheers

Mark:)

I have never had a problem with it. I dive to 80+ feet in a fresh water quarry. I usually dive for about 9 hours per session, and I spend about half my time diving, and the other half resting. Usually I ascend according to scuba standards, but sometimes I get kinda panicky, and come up as fast as I can under my own power. I have only been diving for about 3 months, usually once every weekend, so some other people might have someother perspectives on this question.

It's very rare to get the bends from freedivng alone.
Although you ascend faster, remember that you don't pass hundreds (or thousands) of liters of air through your lungs during the dive, but only your lung capacity (5-8 liters?) each dive.

Suspected cases of freedivers getting the bends come usally from repetitive deep dives with too short surface intervavls. Most beginners have nothing to worry about that. :)

Welcome to deeperblue.

Jason, do you also do a safety stop? :D

I'm used to 12 meters/min ascent rate for scuba (CMAS). If I had to listen to those rules I'de have to take 2-3 minuts for some dives. :duh.

I do my safety stop on the bottom :D
PADI ascent rules are >1ft/sec ~ 18m/min Which means coming from 80 feet, I use just a little more than 1 minute to make my ascent. That is mostly guessing though. I don't have a dive watch. Any one want to send me one?

You'de be surprised how much a watch and your feelings can tell you different things sometimes. That's one of the reasons I got myself a mosquito. Sometimes 30seconds into the dive and 90seconds into the dive just feels the same.
