The best breathe up for spearos

Compared to the way I used to dive, my "unlearned" breath-up of basically not breathing-up usually brings contractions earlier, but they are less severe and I can actually feel bloodshift and vasoconstriction occurring.

Demasoni, that was a great response. Can you describe what the bloodshift and vc feel like? I guess I get so caught up in the fishing that I don't think to take note of the feelings. It makes me want to jump in the water right now and check!

VC is an easy one, you don't feel your extremities too well, they become numb to the cold or other sensations. Ever jumped in cold water? "ice cream headache" and cold hands/feet for a few mins then it goes away? Thats VC.

Bloodshift, hmm, thats a harder one, for me at least. On very deep dives, way past residual volume, I get a "big hug" feeling in my chest on surfacing that lasts a while. (nothing to do with squeeze, which I have never suffered from). Maybe that's it, although I have heard that described as 'plasma shift'.

I'll let the more experienced deep divers chime in..

The breath up you use is much dependent on what you are doing and there are more than a few schools of thought on it. Here's mine, but yours may need to be very different. Cold water diving is also bad vis diving ie: 5 metres, so the hunting technique is different than nice clear-water diving. We dive and then search for fish, which usually means get down to your deepest point, move horizontally then work your way back up a hill or a wall.

thought i would just chuck in my 10 cents worth.

Having done a fair bit of spearing myself, mainly on frc. I have noticed that if i just chill out and let my body decide when to breathe. My dive times have improved alot because im not forcing myself to breathe and im not fighting the breathe reflex, im just using my diaphram to breathe My spearing times are around 2 mins in anywhere up to 25-26m, by using this recovery method i have been able to do frc dives over 3 mins in just over 10m. After i dive i just chill on the surface for double the dive time, i think what also helps is to think positive about the next dive, no negative thoughts.

a "breath up" is a technique used by spearos and freedivers to prepare for a dive. Do a little search in the freediving section "training and techniques." Basically it enables a freediver to control a number of things such as heart rate and CO2 or O2 consumption.
