Tongan Spearing

Second post, haha.

I'm going to Tonga with my girlfriend for Easter this year and whilst it's not a spearfishing trip (As I'm only a beginner and it's supposed to be romantic..) I've just realised the possibilities of spearing on this trip

I ended up buying a Pelaj Kanji 1300 triple band gun on the weekend with an 8mm shaft that was on sale.. extra trigger mech, etc. Now I want to see what I can take on.

I'll be in 'Eua for 6 days and then Fafa Island for just a night.. quite happy shooting reef fish rather than going for big pelagics as I'll be alone, etc. I just want.. to go... somewhere new.

Is it easy to shore dive on 'Eua and Fafa (Or just get a boat to go not-that-far-away?)? What should I be targeting? Etc etc

I was suggesting paying for a guide. You have admitted that you are just starting, you are going somewhere where the dangers may be hidden to you, will you get permission to fish the reefs & fish by the traditional owners? Going with a guide here won’t just mean you should go home with fish, it means you will go home.

True. I didn't think of that - here, everyone owns the coast. Having said that, though.. I'd definitely be asking around. I wasn't thinking about jumping in without talking about.

Eua is a great place for spearfishing - if you can dive. I guided for Rob for a few months in Tonga and Eua was my favourite spot. If you can get hold of a boat it isn't too far to the northern end where there is a chance of Wahoo or Doggies - I even saw a Marlin there. I'm not sure exactly what fish are available around easter, but being summer I'm sure it will be fishy! It is so clean there that even if you don't shoot anything you will see some fish. Beautiful place!

Well, in winter the doggies stayed down past 25m. In the summer they may come up shallower with the baitfish. Wahoo are easy enough.
Not sure about shore diving, you could swim out of the harbour (which is tiny) for reefies and stray randoms.
Fafa island is a nice little spot, takes about 5-10 minutes to walk too the other side of it. You can swim out from there if you want, you can't fish immediately off the island but once you are past the marker poles you will be fine. I'm not sure what you'll find there. It is definitely a romantic spot though!
