My friend and I had a wonderful 2 weeks training camp in Sharm El Sheikh in May, and want to recommend this to other freedivers who plan to go to the Red Sea for training. We are two norwegian freedivers who need to get away from all the cold and bad weather to get going with the depths for the coming season. We have been to Egypt for freediving severals times before, both in Dahab and Sharm. After this camp we definetly think that Sharm is the place to go for our purpose. It is not much more expensive than Dahab and the standards for almost everything is much better (I agree that Dahab is slowly improving its standards). And you dont need to travel the long dirtroad to the blue hole to do your deep diving. Of course, sometimes Sharm can be liable to strong winds in the autum/winter and prevent you from diving, which you never will experience in the blue hole (instead you sometimes have a huge load of snorkellers).
Ricky, Susie, Marco and Ivan has really got the Apnea Academy Red Sea in Sharm going, and they are now also organizing the worlds in constant weight in october-november.
They are based at the Sharm Club Hotel which can easily be reached from all over Sharm with a taxi for not more than 1-3 euro (depends where yo stay). They have a permanent platform with a variable weight just a 50 m swim from the shore, where they have a small pier where you can gear up. At the hotel, which is at the beach, you can use showers, toilets and have a very good buffet lunch for about 6 euro. Everything is very easy and convenient. All you have to think of is your own gear (even this he can probably help you with if something happens). Ricky will fix you a rope to the depth you want.
The price we paid to train is very reasonable. For the first week we paid only 10 euro pr. person pr. day. The second week, which was the Apneaweek (a lot of Italians coming there to dive and Umberto Pelizzari doing a course), we only paid 35 euro pr. person for the hole week (we got a rope after our spesifications reserved for us). If you come down there alone they can most likely also do safety for you at a very decent price.
For a training camp in the Red Sea, Apnea Academy is definetly to be recommended. The service is excellent and they are very nice people. So a big thanks to Ricky and his crew for our successful camp.
