This an open and ongoing thread for planning trips and reporting experiences from Twin this year. If you subscribe to it then you'll always know when any of us are planning to go!

Me and the Bro-in-law went out to see last weekend May 16. The lake had ice on it the week before, so it was shot in the dark so to speak, but we thought 'what the hell'... a bad day diving is better than many other days not diving. The park was full of moronic trailer-trash playing either brainless techno or hayseed music in their 4x4s, plus making huge disgusting messes of beer cans in their campsites, so I only camped one night then left. Saskatchewan is smart in that they make May long weekend a dry-camp law (in Meadow Lake Park anyway), so the f##kheads stay home and bother the other trailer-dwellers. In Alberta $$ rules, so no such rule unfortunately.

The top 10 metres of water had about 1 metre vis, not surprising since the lake was still 'turning'. I was diving below that to the end of my floatline (about 18 metres) and the vis was much better, but no fish to be seen. They are still hiding down deep, waiting for the temperature to change and weeds to start growing in the top 5 metres.
I was cold in about an hour- I think the water was around 5 or 6C, no fish on the stringer, but got to carry the new gun around :) It's a Beuchat Carbon 95, meaning it's actually a 100, meaning it's too big for the lakes, so I'm ordering a Rob Allen 70 from Jimdoe in Fla.

See you all soon I hope.

This isnt about Twin but its about another local lake. Hope thats cool. This weekend I drove out to Mons Lake for my first dive ever and i got to test out the fins and gun i borrowed from Erik (Thx bro). The viz was good and I was warm as hell with my new wet suit (Thx Jim) and i also shot my first fish (I got him on the second shot). It was the only perch i saw all day. There were some monster Pike that were seriously huge and i was stalking them well to within range too but due to Alberta laws i couldnt take any of them :(. I practised equalizing and 'duck' dives? I couldnt get really good bottom time but i was kindy sketchy as i was alone. I had some gun issues but I sorted them out. All in all it was a blast!:blackeye Oh yeah and i was told this evening by an old army freind that Mons lake used to be used as a Mortar range (60 and 81mm). I dont know if its true So if you decide to go, dont be picking anything that looks bombish! Watch wats on the bottom if your playin around. UXO's are very serious and its a good way to vaporize a limb or if its a 81mm, your entire body! PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!

why can't you guys pick lakes closer to medicine hat its a 6 hour drive to you guys and you just had to pick lakes north of you ... thanks
ill make the trip tho maybe i can park my car at some ones place and get i ride with them ??? old old car so it will be shady even getting up there ... errrr i think ill call CAA now lol

ps gear should be getting in today

You can park your chariot at my place dude. And you can ride with me and erik. I think that the reason i never go south is cause thats where wainwright is and i hate that place on so many hidden and deep levels i subconciously cant drive south LOL.

Madprops if you start hunting down south and find decent lakes, let us know. I'd love to come down for a weekend.

Oh right on. I musta missed that. You got some gnarly gear dude. Thats awesome.

Here you go Albertans... Perhaps if enough people read this and phone/ask about it, we can make a difference. This was sent to me from Ken Bodden from Sustainable resources Alberta, when I inquired to the regulations pertaining to the "no size limit" on some lakes, and why we are not allowed to spear them... I hope we can have some luck in swaying their decisions there.

The restriction on spear or bow fishing for pike was implemented when we introduced minimum size limits on the species. Until then pike, perch, lake whitefish and suckers were actively pursued on a limited number of lakes. Perch, whitefish and perch are still allowed to be taken with spears or arrows.
The discussions at the public consultation sessions for the pike management plan did focus on the two issues you raise; the need for minimum sizes and the possibility of fish being injured and subsequently dying from their injuries. The need for the regulation was apparent for the size issue but comments were also collected on the injury issue. Based on all the comments received the regulations were changed to remove pike from species eligible for the gear.
Since the regulations were introduced a number of lakes have had the size restrictions reduced to allow for harvest on lakes subject to winterkill or where environmental conditions are thought to be limiting growth. A number of lakes in the northeast will be monitored over the next few years to see if smaller fish in these lakes are the result of minimum size regulations and harvest activities or environmental conditions. The results of this study may affect a large number of waters in the northeast portion of the province.
Your email is the first I am aware of requesting a review of the regulation. At the time the gear restriction was imposed it had to be applied to all waters. Administratively we have introduced some flexibility into the regulation schedules so that the gear restriction can be applied to individual waters. The next round of consultation for regulation changes has started with the goal of introducing changes for the 2012 season. If you have particular lakes where you would like to see the change made please contact the area fisheries biologist about your concerns. I will raise the issue at the next round of regulation discussions at the provincial level scheduled for September.
Thank you for your comments. If you have other comments or need some help contacting the area fisheries biologist please contact me at this email or at 780-427-7791 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 780-427-7791 end_of_the_skype_highlighting

Hey, long time since my last post here, but out of curiosity, has anyone contacted Ken about regulation changes?? I just want to see if I should stop or not...
