Does anyone own or has anyone used a DPV (dive propulsion vehicle)?
I am looking at a SEADOO SEA SCOOTER, they sell on ebay for around $350.00
A lot cheaper than they used to be, however are they just an expensive toy or are
they a usefull diving aid for scuba?

Scooters are great fun especially if you are diving long reefs and perhaps there is a little current on teh way back that comes unexpected! we used to use them a lot in the caribbean, it's a great toy to have.

We used the Dacor ones which were generally quite sturdy, as long as you keep them maintained.

I have used many( Farallons, Gavins, Oceanics, Aries, Apollos) and own a Dacor one that's great for freediving. The one your talking about is a toy at best. You'd have better luck looking for a used "real" scooter on Ebay than buy purchasing one of those.

I'd highly recommend getting an underwater scooter . I have a Sea Doo Explorer and think it's great. For free diving it extends you range big time and of course it's fun. The Sea-Doo Seascooter Explorer does weigh in at 32# so keep that in mind if you have a long hike to the beach.

Check out the Dynamic Oscillating Lateral Fin, a new product under development. Like DARPA's PowerSwim, it has many advantages of a DPV, without all the weight. Although it is in pre-production, they are looking for beta testers.

I have used a Gavin, X-scooter and a Silent Submersion. depends what you are into. If you want a good solid robust long lasting scooter then get any of the above 3 that I mentioned. They are not cheap. My Gavin cost me $3500 and that was without the batteries.

If you want to bimble around then get a sea-do or Dacor or even apollo.

We had the scooter you mentioned, and it only lasted us barely three years. The motor broke down. It's a relatively underpowered underwater scooter, and I wouldn't recommend it to you.
