No, it produces pulmonary vasodilation, that's why pressures drop down, with vasodilation there is more room for blood in the thoracic cavity. It also reduce the hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction
Frank, that sounds good, but does it increase the vasodilatation specifically only in lungs, or in other organs too, or even in the entire body? Wouldn't it then cause a drop of blood pressure and of the blood shift? Excuse my questions, but I know nothing about the effect of Viagra on the blood system.
@ Trux, it can affect systemic circulation, but the effect is not as strong as in pulmonary circulation
@ Steinar, I'm also against any drug to improve performance, in fact I'm talking about it as a medication. Cialis has been used to prevent High altitude pulmonary edema on climbers, and that is not doping. I think it can be helpful (of course with much more research) to prevent pulmonary edema of immersion

Given the different and even opposite effects that people predict, I suppose it might be worth a study - I mean since they have studied the effects on a team of extreme climbers, they could as well enlist some freedivers.
@steinar: in the article it's written that they are studying the effects, and if it's found to be performance-enhancing they could put it on the black list. For me, if some medication (i.e. supposedly unharmful) was found to make deep diving safer and was readily available to all, I would be open to discussing the possibility.

i think it would be quite easy to see if any male freedivers were using it though steinar ha ha
and i suppose you would be able to notice if female divers were taking it ,if you look like shrek ,like i do, and a beautiful looking freediver was being quite interested in you for some strange reason
and lastly i dont think much diving would be getting done during competitions either
