Hi everyone,

I'm new to this board but have been enjoying reading it for the last couple of weeks.

I'm going to Oaho this weekend (my first visit to Hawaii) for a friends wedding and would like to do some free diving. It's been a last minute affair and I haven't had time to research diving Oahu. Can anyone suggest some good spots?

Thanks!

Jeff

Aloha Jeff!
For the past week, to say that the weather has been foul is an understatement. Four words discribe the water conditions this week, U G L Y! There are a few locals here on DB from Oahu, have a look in the "Beach Bar" under "What have you seen reciently". From the looks of the US Navy surf conditions website the surf should get a little better by the weekend, and I'm sure that the Oahu locals know of a few good spots. Good luck to ya.

Here is the Navy website for Hawaii surf conditions;

You might need to click "accept" about 5 times to get the secure site to load completely.

Try to locate Kevin Busscher on Oahu. He works for the US Govt, I think Dept of the Interior, in Honolulu. Knows where to dive. Might be in the phone book.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm just looking for some decent free diving that I can get to from shore. Sounds like it might not be the best timing due to weather though...

I read about a place called sharks cove. Would that be a good place to try?

Jeff

Sharks Cove is a good place to dive if the waves aren't too big and you aren't looking to spear anything. It's a protected area, so the fish are friendly. Another good place is Haunauma Bay, which is pretty well known, so you have to go early to ensure parking. But as you said the water hasn't been the cleanest, so pick and choose your spots. For more info you can try checking out Hawaiiskindiver.net. That is a board that many local spearfishers use.

Hi!
Sharks cove is nice, I recall coral columns with little thumb-sized eel heads poking out....
If you have a spare 36hours and dare to take an interisland hop, come to Kona and I will take you down to Honaunau. It is really beautiful, the critters are plentiful, even dolphins if you are lucky, and there are great dives to be had.
Give me some notice because I am entertaining freediving guests all summer. Happy to add you to the list. Wahoo!! Contact me for details if you are interested in expanding your trip cheaply and focusing on a couple days of diving.

If you do go to Hanauma Bay, bring a pair of old work gloves and see how far you can follow the cable! :D
