Great thread on a question that has so many answers. I have tried all the above, and here are my 5 pesos worth:
- use a reel on the gun
- use a float with a floating line, and a 0.5Kg/1kg lead on the end, a hoop in the end helps
- dive with the lead in hand (see "pendulum") and release it on the bottom
- the lead keeps the float in place, and I can mark any interesting spots to return to
- no nasty tugging on the gun as you work around

Thats about the best solution I have found.

same for me. I tie 1kg of lead at the end of my floatline, the lead stays under my belt while swimming to another place, and is dropped to the bottom to stay in place while I'm actually hunting in the area.
When I decide to move again and leave the area, I tuck the floatline lead under my belt again, and when I arrive to the interesting spot I drop it again and start hunting.
Again and again.
This way the float is always close to me, but I'm not tied to it while crawling between rocks and kelp.
Sometimes the current or the surf moves the float quite far away despite the anchor weight, this is the downside of the system.

I use the same system except I clip the weight on the end of the float line to my belt when travelling using a snap link. When fishing I carry the weight in my hand.
