I seem to be naturally built of concrete. 
Even with a wetsuit on I float upright with my clavicle under the surface. I'm going to have to do some experimentation to see what it takes to get neutral at about 20 feet . . . but then right now my surface dive technique sucks!

Depends on depth - I was out receently with a friend who has no belt, after an hour I lent mine to her.
Felt strange as I normally use a belt, but anyway there was lots of kelp to hang onto a short way down (less than 10m).
I found it felt a bit free-er and when I wanted to surface just let go of the kelp and pop to the top.
Not ideal for proper deep follow-the-line-down sort of freediving but for recreational diving in the shallows it should be fine.
I guess you waste more energy by trying to beat the boyancy but with long fins in shallow water (< 10m) you should be fine.
Tried "no gear" freediving the other day while out swimming - ie me and a pair of trunks only. A bit harder to get down and alot harder to come back up - got a good push off the bottom though with bare feet.
