Wetsuit Question

OK I bit the bullet and ordered a 3mm tailor made suite Lizzardwetsuits in Durbs.

As a former Pretoria boy I have a lot to learn about spearfishing....

I had to go with the double nylon as they only had black in the open cell and I wanted a camo suite.

What do you prefer open cell or double nylon?

I am a newbie in this sport and cant wait to get my head under the water here in the UAE.

What do you suggest I do with the wetsuit when the water gets really warm?

Just wear the farmer john and a Lycra shirt?

Still a lot of questions to come with regards to other equipment but that can wait.

Hi Gerhard

Freedivers in Durbs also make great suits for spearing, they are more specialised in spearfishing/ Freediving as opposed to lizzard, who are more surf-geared. ( FreeDivers) But having said that, the water is warm in UAE, so any 3mm suit will be cool.

Best to dive with top and bottom, just to avoid stings, reef-rash etc. I dive with a 5mm in capetown, and if I'm in slightly warmer water such as Knysna, I find it helps just to flush water into my hoodie and down by back after each dive to stay cooler.

Open cell or double Knylon, most spearo's go for open cell here, but again, if warm water, double Knylon will be fine, and it will probably save you money, as open cell suits are quite flimsy and tend to break regularly. If you dive in really cold climes, open cell is a must.

We are getting together on the 8th for a group spearo day, I will just swim with the guys and learn.

An old coloured fisherman once told me while I was struggling with getting bait on my hook near Mosselbaai.

"Steel met jou oe" en doen die selfde.
