What I told my daughter about freedivers

We have some freinds who are from India, and all of whom happen to be doctors of one sort or another. One night over a few beers Deep tells me, "People in America get this misinformed idea that everyone from India is super smart and that's why were all doctors or scientists. Nothing could be further from the truth! We just don't spend thousands of dollars for the idots to come over here!"

So I guess it's all what your exposed to. Traveling will expose you to more people from more places- some are nice and others are idiots.

this is alot more fun than I even thought! It's worth noting India does have like a 10,000 year old intellectual tradition. Some of those guys had damn near the whole universe memorized.

Of course they've also got rednecks that would put our most strung out deer-poaching crank-heads to shame.

I'm gearing up this BC trip as a graduation present for my Daughter. I've allready warned her not to make any sudden movements in the water if Eric F is around.

Well, here in the great north we have people who make a drug called 'Crystal-Meth' - some sort of uber stimulant they make from processing cold medicine with various toxic and flammable chemicals. It is highly addictive and they periodically die - either from taking it, from breathing the fumes from processing it, in shoot-outs with police or when their homes explode from the fumes getting too concentrated. Poaching deer is simply shooting deer out of season. Strung-out is a generic term which in this case refers to the overall psycho-physical condition resulting from prolonged use of the above.

To be fair though - you don't really encounter those folks much - they tend to keep to themselves. I have no idea how they vote.

I recently began sharing my interest in freediving with my 19year old son. Got him some fins, took him with me on a couple of Hawaii trips. He really likes it and is looking forward to spending the summer in Kona diving with his Pops.

He got his Scuba rating when he was 13 but hadn't been aware of any opportunities with freediving until I started doing it. Now he sez that when he thinks of me, its obvious that I would be a freediver. I have been a nationally ranked competitive swimmer, martial artist, tournement fighter, ultralight backpacker, etc and to him it seemed like the meditative discipline of freediving was an obvious choice for his old man.

Most of the true freedivers I meet are pretty deep folks, if you pardon the pun. Introspective, open to new experiences, appreciative of the opportunities that freediving offers and the chances to share those experiences with a small group who have done it..... seem to be common traits.

Spearos on the other hand..... some of them, like some other kinds of hunters, you wouldn't want in the same ocean with your daughter much less any closer.

I have met some really cool spearos, though. People I want to learn how to spear from if I ever decide to learn...

I'd most like to do Bluewater Spearfishing - for meal-sized fish. It's allways between that and the camera though.
