What is a new linkback?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

Now and then I get an email telling me that there are new linkbacks to threads to which I am subscribed, and I got about 5 or 6 today.

What does this mean to me? Will I continue to get an email when there is a new post to the threads?

I'm just not sure what to do with this information.

I don't know Bill, often asked the same to myself. Some of the mods will answer I'm sure.
But having your attention in this thread, I'm told you're back in water and caught some splendid fish. Shall we DB folks have a..."link back" to your succesful season inauguration as soon as possible?

Well, only if you insist.:)

It was a truly lucky way to come back after 6 months vacation after surgery.

I've put a link in a new thread in Trip Reports. I suppose I should start over with the story here, but there is already so much invested in that Spearboard thread.

Simplified told, it is a mechanism telling you someone was referring to your thread on another website, or linking the thread on an external page (i.e. in a forum on another website). You can then view the referrers at the bottom of the thread - the other website may contain relate information that may be of interest for you too.

Linkbacks are a pain in the ass! Can I stop them?
I do not understand why they would a pain in the ass. Linkbacks are external links pointing back to the specific post, so you can see where on web the topic was referred or discussed too, so you can have a look there for possibly more information on the same topic. It is very useful, in fact, and I do not understnad what on it could be annoying and how.

I also do not know why and how you imagine you could stop other people linking to DB posts. Well, it is certainly possibly to make the forum private with no public access, but that's certainly not in anyones interest.

I think you misunderstand. I am simply annoyed when all of a sudden I get 20 emails telling me something I don't need to know. I am happy that people are employing this option to direct people back to DB.

That's not linkbacks. That's email notifications then :) Why don't you disable them in your user profile? I never get any emails from DB, because I did not opt for them.
