what knifes do you use?

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
The lock button on the sheath is bitchy, but overall I'm very pleased with my italian Riffe.

The sliding safety on the riffe silencer can be removed rather easily after dismantling the sheath. I think it took me about 5 min with a small screwdriver to take it apart and put it back together minus the safety. Works much better now. The silencer is my back up knife which I wear on my the inside of my calf.
I use an omer mini or miniblade on my forearm for the main job, i.e. killing fish. They do the job well, but I don't like the steel quality of the omers; much to soft (and easily blunted) in my experience. I'm planning to replace it with the wenoka squeeze lock titanium some day..

I use the same as Spaghetti, does the job well....especially when i managed to get tangled in some fishing line on tonights dive!!

Cool thread I like knives..
I currently also have a Riffe silencer and it is a good knife but doesn't keep its edge well. Not really an issue as long as you keep on top of it.. oh and remember to rinse and dry it well! I also am a big fan of the Omer Laser and Mini Laser having used both in the past.
I am about to make a new dive knife up next month, life has got in the way recently but its all drawn up now just awaiting payday so I can order up the steel.
If it goes well I will add some pics lol, cant see it being an issue as I have made a good few 'normal' knives but by god to I hate hand working S/S! Still having qualms about the handle.. do I go flat and plain steel, or plasticy shapelock type affair. Although I am keen to try out some of the stabilised woods available as they 'should' cope fine with salt water submersion...

Sounds good ickleD, what grade stainless will you use and do you have to polish it to get a good finish?

Well I am hoping to use 316L but having a job getting it in flat stock form locally so probably an internet order job, usually work in 01 or D2 but that's no good for a dive knife! Finish will be whatever I make it I am undecided on a slightly matt finish, 400grit or sand blasted or mirror polish. Either way the sharp bits are super shiney usually finish to 2000 grit on paper then final finish on ceramic.

Cold, I heat treat (well dabble in heat treating) mild steel but not stainless, imagine lots of sweat and some files an your pretty much there!

^ that looks like a nice shape knife and very similar to what I have drawn up.. although my handle is less stylised, what sort of dimensions is it?
Been giving my sheath options some thought tonight and obviously leather isn't going to cut it, I quite like the idea of doing one in kydex but think it will end up too bulky so may try a thick cloth pancake type one like the Rob Allen ones. Any thoughts?

Im getting all inspired now! :D Got some 3mm s/s in the workshop, might just have to go and play with my anglegrinder... I imagine you could add some teak sides to the handle for comfort and looks.I made a sheat for my first "dive"knife, a Mora stainless builders/carpenterknife,with a piece of rubberbelt folded double. It kind of worked ok.

God why didn't I think of teak, obvious really given its other uses, and the fact I am planning a new set of kitchen knives with teak hadles duh! Lol do it, worse that happens is you have less s/s either that or less fingers lol! I will (when I finish converting it to a vector) upload pics of what I am planning, have just embarked on turning my drawings into computer files so I can replicate things (thinking I might sell some one day) Hopefully ordering bits tomorrow and maybe even start work the weekend!

I just got the Mares Snake and i gotta say it looked much better on the pictures, and it's much heavier than one would expect from a knife with such a narrow blade (probably because of the Zn protection). But the thing that puzzles me most is what's the point of the double safety on the sheath ? I mean it's nice to know there's no way you're losing your knife, but shouldn't the knife be quickly accessible when your leg gets stuck in the old fishermen net (happened twice to me), and i'm heaving a real hard time removing the safety rubber ring even on dry land. At 1st glance i'm a little disappointed after paying 60 bucks for it, but we'll see in the water.

My new favorite knife Speardiver Skene. Low profile, stainless steel, stiletto blade, solid comfortable grip.

I like the look of that - how long is the blade? I think I'd prefer it with a Limpet sheath though. I love my Omersub Mini-Laser USA, the blade and handle are excellent for dispatching fish - the main weakness seems to be sheath which is inexplicably bulky & some odd tags on the rubber straps. I glued a pocket onto my old wetsuit to hold the sheath on my thigh instead - within easy reach :)

IckleDevil, yes make a pancake sheath like the Rob Allen limpet sheath. I've been waiting for mine to fall apart so that I can see how it is made but it just lasts and lasts. I think there is simple former, probably flat plastic, that gives it its shape, possibly folded to cover both sides (or perhaps not). The main construction seems to be some sort of black gaffa/duct-tape wrapped around it and the wide elastic leg bands. Why don't you just buy one, I think they were about £7 (possibly less but probably more now :( ).

This spring I treated myself to two new knives: OMDs favourite, the tiny wenoka titanium, and the speardiver red tide knife.
They are both excellent and serve different purposes for me. I carry the wenoka glued onto my arm as my primary knife for dispatching, bleeding and gutting fish and the red tide knife on my calf as a back up knife for giant fish or hairy situations where I need to cut myself out of a mess. I've yet to use the red tide, but it's sharp, seems tough and I love the double serrated edge. The titanium wenoka works very well and is just the right size for the average fish. It's also nice to have it on my arm and the red tide on my calf as I have the everyday knife conveniently close and the backup knife reachable with both arms.

The Wenoka Titanium EZ lock looks like a wicked knife. I found a good deal from Northeast Scuba Supply, has anyone heard of this shop? I never heard of them before so I don't want to place an order just like that hehe
