Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I've allways wanted to swim with one of those beasties. Saw one in the Silver River in Fla once - but only 3 or 4 feet. Huge and wonderfully primative critters.
 
not too bad but its one of those fish that you dont want to eat large quantities of. The meat is kinda tough though. Many times we give the big ones to bank fisherman who are so grateful they act like its christmas morning!
 
no. They shoot most of them in lake pontetrain...its been a long time since I shot one. We see them in the rivers, bays and marinas quite frequently
 
Fishbase had some interesting info. Max published size is 137KG around 3 meters... thats a big fish. It is the largest of the gar and they call it a "sluggish fish" but "voracious predator." It is <not> on the red list as Rigdvr noted and is marketable-though I don't think I would eat one!
