For some freedivers, having a neck weight in self propelled depth disciplines lowers the center of gravity. Having a lower center of gravity during the free fall/sink phase part of the dive helps in maintaining a vertical position (head down). It eliminates the need to make annoying attitude corrections with a kick while falling.
