Hey guys new here to deeperblue and excited about it. I've been reading posts after posts and loving it. My brother and I have been swimming and freediving in Salt and fresh for about 5 years now off and on. Just recently have we gotten serious enough about it to expand our horizons. Been doing a lot off freediving here in the local shallow kelp patties getting more familiar with our surroundings. We also have picked up spearfishing as well and are having custom woods made here locally in temecula. When we get time off work we'd love to meet up with locals and learn all they know! Just so you know, kelp attached to the bottom is called a kelp bed. When its torn from the bottom and floating in the open ocean, its called a kelp paddy.
The kelp beds south of Dana Point where I usually dive, as well as those at Catalina, are in horrible shape this year. I hope they grow back, but I think its going to take a cool winter.
Monday and Tuesday gun maker Daryl Wong visited me from Hawaii and I got out to the islands for the first time this year. It was great to see some blue water, and we got lucky with 10 big yellowtail on Monday and 6 on Tuesday. Daryl's largest weighed over 36 pounds.
The first photo is Daryl with the big one. The second is Daryl and I, and the third is Daryl and his friend James, a Navy guy from San Diego.
