I'm fairly new at this game but a few months ago I received another good lesson. At Honaunau there are two submerged buoys 10 meters apart that are anchored in 60+ meters. A surface float was attached to one but nothing to the other.
With viz 30+ meters and everyone in sight I made a free immersion to 20 meters with a 30 second static on the rope with no surface float. The dive went as planned and, with about 1:30 on the meter, I came to the buoy on the way up. I 'knew' it was at 10 meters. When I let go, the buoy went up and the line raced by after it.
It took a few seconds to figure things out. I not only pulled the buoy down, I drifted to 30 meters and cleared at least once while I was doing it. Now, with a pulse rate approaching the redline, it was 30 meters to the surface, not 10.
I wonder how exciting things would get if the plan was 30, the driftdown was to 45 and the trim another kilo negative.
