Why do YOU freedive?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I freedive because it's SO much less hassle than scuba diving.

I used to do quite a bit or deep wreck diving on trimix and deep air. When I think about how much time took to rig the gear, mix that gas, plan the dive, and do the deco after out bottom time was over with I think that the sport was invented by people who hate the water- because you really don't get much time in the water for all the effort you put into the sport. ;)

With freediving it takes me all of about 10 minutes to get my gear on and I can spend hours in the water without ever having to get out- 10 hours is my current record for a single day. I can cover more ground, see more sites, find more treasures, spear more fish, and spend more time escaping from reality.

Last weekend I ended up teaching an ice diving class (scuba) and the whole time I just kept thinking about how much easier, and more fun, this would have been if we were freediving instead of dealing with all these extra bits of gear. I'm pretty sure my Elios wetsuit is even warmer than the viking drysuit I was using for the depths we were diving to. :)

One other thing I started doing since I got heavy into freediving is spearfishing. This is something that I tried once when I was 14 and then never tried it again until I was 34. On scuba I was never interested in it, but once I started freediving it became a whole new challenge.

Oh, and freediving is a hell of a lot cheaper than scuba diving as well- especially technical diving!

Jon, nice description of enjoying water with less giving you more. The only problem I have with your above statement is in Red. My thinking is when your in the water it is reality, when your not its reality with too much marketing, cleavage and distractions from whats really important. When I was a kid 8-10, I spent so much time in the water playing rag/tag that my warts on my hands just disappeared. God I miss the water.
