Hi guys, I recently just started holding my breath to see how long I could hold it for and I find that each time, in a particular set, it will increase. Yesterday I struggled to get to 2.5, then 3, then 3.5 then 4. I'm really curious how it is possible that I can add 1.5 minutes on to my initial time after a few breath holds...?

Good question.

A number of reasons, not weighing in equally.
Well your body gets more used to the feeling of high CO2, you get better in relaxation, your spleen is releasing more blood into the bloodstream, you get more flexible and can breath in more and hold your breath easier, the CO2 is having a narcotic effect.

I hope others can supplement this small list.

Welcome to Deeperblue, dive safe, have a qualified buddy.

Can't help you - but I found exactly the same thing.
Went from approx 2 mins to almost 4 mins in one evening.

I've not tried maxing since, so I don't know how long the drastic increase lasts! I guess it will plateau soon.

WMM.

Indeed it's likely to plateau, challenging you to search deeper, train more and in different ways in order to grow.

Don't push yourself too hard, for breath hold training is much more demanding than most suspect.

For beginners it's advisable to read into Table A (CO2) and Table B (O2) training. Building that understanding and solid base from which to expand.

Awesome thanks for the info. I tried to download some apnea software last night but I didn't get the required mark and hence have been rejected from trying for 24 hours...haha

Yep, the same thing happens to me too, when I practice with a breath hold tables - the improvement, even within the space of an hour, is quite dramatic (and I definately recognise the narcotic affect of the CO2: it becomes a pleasurable thing to hold your breath beyond 3 minutes, as opposed to the extremely uncomfortable experience I remember, when trying to do it as a child, for anything over a minute).
