Why is deeperblue more of a community than other dive forums?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Those are the advantages of local forums.
All I can say to you Bill, is that I was genuinely happy when Scarlett was born, that I really did spare a thought for you when you were under surgery, that it gave me a smile of joy when you speared your first WSB after the surgery, that it gave me a smile when I saw your wife riding her horse, that I've been thinking a lot of your story of when you lost your buddy on a trip, that I think of you as a friend.
Then if you ask me what's the weather like in Huntington beach, I'm sorry, I have to tell you I have no idea. And there's no need for you to keep a spot for me on your boat for this weekend: I won't be there, unfortunately.
And anyway, maybe it's because there's something wrong in my head, but to me you're more than a typing character in my PC screen. To me (and maybe you can say I'm insane for this) to me you're my friend Bill McIntyre.

Dang Spago, I'm jealousrofl

This is an Alcoholics site with a diving problem.

Next question.

For me, this is my diving family not community. I feel so welcome and everybody is so friendly. No room for arrogance even with the top notch divers and spearos. They are always willing to lend a helping hand whether you are a newbie or a pro.

So who says we are alcoholic with a diving problem? Where's my case of beer? Hic..hic...:friday:friday:friday

Cheers:friday:friday:friday

I've waited to chime in here because I didn't want to post a question and then answer it straight away. I think what makes deeperblue more of a "community" to me is the fact that it is not a local community. Here's what I mean. A local community is a group of people who have common objectives and are close enough that they can collaborate and achieve those objectives. That could be something as simple as going out for a dive tomorrow morning, or getting a petition signed to stop a particularly oppressive fish and game regulation. Spearboard is GREAT for that. But on deeperblue, the fact that you know you will probably not meet many of the other members changes the dynamic of the entire community.
In a local community you have a reputation and everything you do reflects on that reputation. Ergo, all of your actions are calculated (whether consciously or subconsciously) to protect that reputation. Therefore, when you interact with other members of a local community you are not always as true to yourself as you can be when you are with your husband/wife (who you can let your guard down around) or your close friends (who know what a dick you are and still like you anyway). But also on deeperblue, since we are primarily an online community, there is an anonymity to who we are here. Because of this, we can be whatever we want and there is really no repercussion in our every day lives. It is this fact, that we can be as selfish and obnoxious as we want without any major consequencecs, and we still decide to be helpful and friendly to eachother. We appreciate eachother more because, for the most part (at least in the beginning), we're not asking for anything other than to enjoy the company of other people with a similar passion.
Maybe it's just me, but on deeperblue I'm less guarded than I am in real life and less guarded than I am on spearboard. I love spearboard, it's got tons of great info and it's a hub off connections and contacts. But sometimes when I post on spearboard I guard my posts because I don't want people to think I'm looking for an invite on a dive trip, or an invitation to borrow some tools. While I know many of them are nice people who would be more than willing to take me out for a dive, or run me through the proper process for using a table router without earning a handicaped parking spot out of the deal, just the thought in the back of my head that I don't it to seem like I'm looking for something makes the sense of community less for me. In a sense it's the thing that makes spearboard good, that people there can really help you out in real life, that lessens the openness of the community that I think we have here on deeperblue.

--my 2 cents--

EDIT: Just for the record, I'm a pure spearo. I "freedive" primarily because I enjoy the enhanced mobility over scuba, and because it makes the sport more challenging (the fact that I'm a very mediocre freediver REALLY makes it more challenging ;) ). I enjoy all of the freediving posts here (they helped me out a lot when I was a beginner and really brought my spearfishing to a new level) but my freediving is incidential to my spearfishing.

Another thing about deeperblue that separates deeperblue from spearboard (which is the othe forum I mentioned at the start of the thread but wasn't going to reference by name, but as that horse is out of the barn I see little point in beating around the bush now) is the maturity of the members here. While deeperblue is open to everyone of all ages, I think it reaches out to a more mature audience (not necessarily measured by age). Spearboard has a lot of members in the 13-18 age range which changes the types of posts and responses that you get. I don't mean to sound like the grumpy old man, I'm only 24, but I just enjoy the maturity that most people here share. (Disclaimer: The term maturity, as used here, specifically excludes: makin sexual jokes of a general nature; making sexual jokes that specifically pertain to Island Sands; making sexual jokes that refer to certain members sex lives (which are rich and entertaining despite the fact that their sex usually only involves one person); making jokes concerning alcoholism ranging from the casual 30 pack of beer per day to more serious drinking problems.

Hi alexrom I agree with alot of what you said but not the meeting up people.

I know if I am heading away foreign I will see who in db if anyone is in that area to see if a meet is possible hopefully to have them bring me to their dive spot and have met loads either through comps in the uk, courses in egypt or just on holidays or by some people visiting me.
I have met more people outside of Ireland on db than Irish people on db but maybe we will have a meet up soon to correct that. Granted because I'm in europe its a lot easier but I would not regard myself as a frequent freedive traveller. Some of the people travel to a lot of comps every year and meet more and more because of it. I appreciate thats its a lot harder from the states.

In any case theres always a welcome on the mat here for any db people.

Golly - I only just stumbled on this thread and it's brought a little smile to my face.

Believe it or not DB as a site (in one incarnation or another) is roughly 13 years old and like a teenager has gone through lots of stages in it's little life.

In the first few years it was a very small and homely site. The community was tiny and it took a lot of nurturing and care. Everyone was friendly and thoroughly enjoyed each others company.

We saw a bit of a growth spurt and lots of new members came on board and the community grew. We went through growing pains but we came out the other side pretty much intact.

Now we're relatively mature as a community - we see steady growth and the community is pretty well defined, although like any community it will continue to grow and change.

I'm extremely proud of the community we've got here. Members, staff, lurkers and trolls all seem to be pretty well behaved and i've had the tremendous opportunity to meet quite a few of the members in real life which has always been a real pleasure.

I'm obviously not around as much as I used to be (real life gets in the way) but I check in nearly every day quietly and i'm always so pleased to see how well the community is doing.

I have to say that the staff doing a tremendous job here and are the unsung heroes of the forum as they put in huge effort for no real reward.

Anyway i'll be raising a glass tonight to all the members of the forum here!

Maybe we could describe the spirit's forums like a person?

I see the DB forum like a middle age man, that is interested in people, learning, teaching, has patience* and practices civics. Furthermore he has seen a lot of communication traps and skilfully avoids destructive name calling and immoral practices not allowing himself to be dragged down to the level of those to seek to destroy and dominate.

What kind of person is DB to you?

* Patience he has for many because English is not their first language, and he understands that people on every level still have their own limitations but in essence mean well. It's funny how expressions can be misunderstood when translated:
From Ocean Men, Umberto about Pipin: "I don't like him as a man" - did he mean he does not like him to be on top in the role of 'the man'? or does he simply means he doesn't like him as a human?

I've waited to chime in here because............

Alex your post pretty sums it up:

We're a bunch of old farts.
Nobody knows who we really are.
We can't be any helpful to anyone in real life.
We tend to hide our alcohol problems under silly jokes.

Thanks a lot, Alex. I mean really, yes really, thank you very much Alex. I feel better now. Thanks a lot for your post. So kind of you. I feel so much better now....:waterwork

i like DB cause of the free beer. You do all get that 24 can slab delivered to the door evey month right??

oh, and I have also met about half of them/you. The other half, or "lucky ones" as we can call them for now, I'll get to soon.

Who is that in the shadows?

Azapa,

Speaking of community, I was in Chile in 1957 when I was on a Naval ROTC summer cruise and our fleet put into Valparaiso. I took a four-day trip up to Santiago, and had a hell of a good time. We had to wear our uniforms, but people would approach us and ask us to dinner at their houses.

Of course that was way before our CIA's meddling in your politics, so I don't know if US citizens are viewed so favorably now.

I don't think we met though.

Of course it was in the middle of your winter, so it was cold as hell.

You forgot to mention how we hide our sexual frustration in silly jokes too.:chatup

Bill, the CIA didn't just meddle lightly, they full on funded part of general Pinochet's military coup over the democratically elected Communist party, Salvador Allende being killed in the attempt. Ironically they bombed the presidential palace, "la moneda", with British Hawker Hunter planes. Strange World in those days.

Chileans are great though! Just don't mention politics..

Very good.

Most people on deeperblue post as themselves, and they will go on to meet other people they speak to on the net. Ending up meeting people who end up lifelong friends. The other thing that makes this a great community is the majority seek to help out those who wish to improve and stay safe. They don't pretend to be somebody they are not. They are positive and don't allow negativity from others to bring them down. Why flame somebody, just ignore them if they annoy you :)

It amazes me aswell how many freedivers and spearos who post on here that have so much knowledge and skill, many world class, are just genuinely nice people and just want to share their passion with others. They are not afraid to use their sense of humour to show they don't take themselves TOO seriously even though they are masters at what they do.

Cheers Stephan for a great site :)

p.s. dive safe and enjoy :)

I’ve personally met a heap of people through Deeper Blue, many of which have become very close personal friends and I’m fairly sure that they’ll all say that I post as myself,
all shy, quiet and withdrawn.:D:D:D
