Why we shoot so many Carp

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Some carp are native to the US. Others, like Asian Carp that are in the IL river were brought over to eat algae in fish farms. When the river rose and flooded the fish farm, the carp were then in the wild.

Some lakes have had regular car put into the water by man. One lake at a fishing club I know of is over run. They are strip mine lakes and any fish put in were put in by people.

Some carp are less of a threat than others. From what I understand, Grass Carp are good for the waters Common Carp and Asian Carp, overtake the waters.

Nostres, the carp we have been shooting up in WI are not Asian Carp. As far as taste, people have said that if you take these fish and put them in clean water for a week or two before killing and cooking them that they would be better. But who wants to do that?

World Record carp: *Skating the Infosphere » Fish + Luring
As reported in BaggingUp.co.uk, the common carp world record has fallen again. German angler Emir Caro has been targeting this particular carp for over three years and hios patience has finally paid of. The 84lb 12oz (38.45Kg) monster common carp was tempted with a 20mm boilie on a size 3 Mako super fly hook, 18lb Krystonite and a 65lb Score Gold lead core leader.

The common carp world record comes just a few weeks after the overall world record carp was caught from Rainbow Lake in France by Graham Slaughter.

That still remains in despute, for it is still an aquatic invader and is being treated as such. I over heard a conversation a few years back that some guys tried stocking them in a lake in the Fox basin.(this would have been a new introduction) The DNR Swifty dealt with them but it still unknown as weather they escaped into their new environment. I have read they have escaped into the Mississippi and Missouri systems, already an invader.

Like I said, from what I understand. I thought I was also told that the grass carp will not reproduce in the lakes they put them in around here. Or maybe they made them sterile somehow, I really don't recall. I'm not up on my carp sciences.

Fishlips in Sun Prairie- Welcome to Deeperblue first of All!! You'll have to come to some outings with us and try some different spearguns out- I'm not familiar with the Dacor speargun. It seems that a speargun 30+ inches seems to work. Obviously the more power the better. I like using the Euro style guns simply for the smaller spears. You can use them on panfish or Carp. Come spearfishing with us sometime and I'll let you try the HammerHead.

Whopperhead thanks for the offer!
Down the line I may have to pick up another gun - friends always want to try it, so it's nice to have a spare. Of course, they'd be stuck with the Dacor most of the time :t
I've also had some smoked carp. No too bad after downing a few beers first.
I'd just like to shoot them to clean up the water.
Heh, there are guys up north who flyfish for them, and practice catch and release!

Grass carp are sometimes made sterile and released for plant and algae control.

That old Dacor will do just fine- it's just like a JBL.

My Mother, and Grandmother, just got back from a two week trip to the Czech Republic. They ate carp when they were there and thought it tasted pretty good- fried in a light batter.

Lakes around here are still a mess, but the rain, and 60 degree temps, should start to open things up again pretty soon.

I would think that a little time in a pressure cooker basket would rid the meat of that greasy taste. But then again if its bacterial it may ruin the lot :) I thought that if a guy was to try that then perhaps a native buffalo out of Mendota would be a good start.
The buffalo carp may be old as the hills and full of God knows what? As for Monona? I would perfer any large fish out of Mendota myself for eating.

Hey WH !,

I lived in Buffalo NY for about a decade and while there I bowhunted carp religiously. Believe it or not of all the fish I caught, with it's greasy red meat it was always a favorite smoked !..It retained it's moisture after smoking. It does however have a muddy taste when caught in the heat of the summer ,but if you're ever in germany and ask them for their finest fish dinner you'll recieve carp from what I've read.

Tom

I have a smoker and plan on smoking small ones- If I get one I'll clean right there and hopefully it helps with the taste.

Bowfishing is what go me into this sport in the first place :D

wow, i would be so pissed if i got a carp while flyfishing. trout/bass is my main target when i take out my rod. i catch and release these guys but dont share that practice w/ the squaws and other trash fish.

(on a closer note to the thread) its the big game fish that are the problem in lake pend o'reille; the rainbows and lake trout have really hurt the native kokanee. along with the overfishing of kokanee when they were abundant. now there is no bag limit for lake trout or rainbows and if you send in a head thats over 2-3 inches (cant remember exactly) you get a 15 dollar check in the mail for each head! :D

lol catch and release of carp on a fly rod... actually they r really fun on a fly rod and i even practice it to catch and release ...into the ditch 4 coons
