FINS RAZOR CARBON -MARES

or

GARA PROFESIONAL - CRESSI

and my actual fins are GENESIS from SEAC-SUB:

the price is of no importance.

if money is of no issue, then go for a pair of C4 mustangs or Mtechniks carbon blades in your favourite pockets, personally i think they will be better than both of the models above.

i have professionals and they are good however compoflex isnt to the same stage as carbon yet as far as flex and response characteristics. and of the carbon fins the best i have used to date are the above mentioned fins by quite a long way (and now that i think about it OMER rekords are pretty remarkable as well)

where to start..... have you searched past post on this subject..... there is no comparison in carbon vs plastic because the difference is as night to day.... aside of that your best choice will be the marez carbon or any carbon blades out there... how deep do you dive ? where you dive and the structured area where you dive are all considerations i recommend you to take before making a purchase. GL

i use carbontek mimmetic's mounted on sporasub foot pockects and i love them. 100% thumbs up all the way up!

i did that, and it paid!!
but if money becomes of issue (and a c4 mustang is not cheap at all), you can purchase a c4 wahoo (same as mustang, but plastic blade), which are absolutely great for a plastic fin
as for the gara professional, i heard they're pretty stiff (but i never tried them)

I have a pair of C4s, went back to Cressi Garas. Aside from the 'snap' feeling, not a great deal of difference between carbon and plastic in my opinion. The Professionals are apparently very stiff, though I haven't tried them. If they even make a very soft version I'll be all over them.

Mullins i do have to agree that the gara 3000 are brilliant (i.ve got my girlfriend in a pair of the LD's and she loves them)

as far as plastic fins go and for spearing 3000's are the go hard pressed to be beaten at any price point particularly in the lower end.

pretty much indestructable!

and the guys i know personally can go to well over 40m in them then they are more than good enough for me.

Fin choice is a real personal thing, I can't stand the cressi's, the soft base makes the fins bend on the middle of my foot, they are just terrible for me. My favority fin is the specialfin hybrid medium stiffness, I am using with omer pockets.

I haven't used carbon fiber, but I think fiberglass is a nice step up from all the plastic blades I've used, and its cheaper than CF and industructible. I am very pleased with my 20fathoms Edge in Picasso foot pockets.

20 Fathoms - Home

The web site shows them in blue, but they are now camo.

And I have to add that Vali's initial question is very difficult to respond (choice between Mares carbon and Cressi Pro). The Mares carbon are such a new product that you'll be hard pressed to find anybody who has tried them yet. (they were pictured in the 2008 catalogue, but they actually arrived in shops only a couple months ago as far as I know).

Bill Mc your Edge fins are very good looking indeed. Are they Australian made or US? (I'm just asking for cultural interest: always wondered why there aren't more US made fins on the market other than Riffe and a few others).

Bill

You are still using the blade stiffness number II correct ?

Correct. I was using that in the Matrix, and I stuck with it in the Edge. If you make a lot of deep dives, them maybe #3 would be better, but I do a lot of swimming against current on the surface and don't dive over 50 to 60 feet, so the #2 suit me fine.

I'm not really sure. I think I've heard that they are made in Russia, but then maybe it was Canada.

As far as Riffe goes, he used to have his fins made by Omer, and I'm pretty sure the present models are made in Europe too.

Of the two that you ask about...

the Mares has a more comfortable foot pocket that allows the blade to work well and is the better of the two, by far. You can also switch the blades out.

I found the Cressi professionals uncomfortable in the foot pocket are and unlively in the blade. I expected more of this fin. The 'Gara 3000' are better perf. and price than the 'Gara Professional'

I try out everything I can find.

Additionally, my favorite footpocket is the Nemo, and then combine it with the blade you like. You will not be disappointed.

Jared

Do you mean the new mares pocket ?

Bill

Canada or Russia all the same, someone from Canada can probably see Russia from their back yard. I've heard they were the XXone, also heard Russia.

yes,....the mares 'razor' foot pocket. This is the newest one I have from Mares. I think that's the one he was asking about. ?? Same pockets as in the picture he linked.

It's available with different blades, but same foot pocket. I also have the Gara 'professional' that he asked about but will happily sell it.

No, the holes are not all the same nor the width of the screws. In some cases like Omer-sporasub, they are in the same spot/similar spot, but...

This can be solved by (what I do) glue'ing the blades into the pockets. You use windshield type glue sealant. It doesn't have to be super strong just to secure the blades. (Mtechnic and some blades recommend this.) Wherever the blades contact the foot pocket put a little bit 'o glue to secure.

You can also use screws and bolts of different sorts as well, but I think in many cases it binds up the blades a little. They are usually stiff enough at the base of the fin and I don't bother to tighten down more.

On my Nemo fin pockets, and other pocket blade combos, I just make sure there is a snug fit. I have not had any problems and I check my gear when I wash and then prior to a dive.

Keep rocking the bi-fins!

the same for me, i tried then once and couldn't use them for more than a few mins
let's say i am used to my mustang pocket, which doesn't bend at all, so it gives a completely opposite feeling
