People start asking me more and more frequently where to find the list of wild cards for the coming world championships. So here you go:

http://apnea.cz/ranking.html?simple+10+AOR+2010

These results are already filtered, and include on AIDA results and only those officially ranking.

For a top10 list of all six disciplines in your country, you can use links in the following form (just replace the FR with the two letter code of your country in uppercase):

http://apnea.cz/ranking.html?simple+10+AOR+2010+FR

Some countries count also results from non-ranking national AIDA competitions. In that case, it would be as follows:

http://apnea.cz/ranking.html?simple+10+AIDA+2010+FR

And in some countries even results from other federations are accepted. In that case use this one:

http://apnea.cz/ranking.html?simple+10+2010+FR

Please note that in some cases (if that specific page was never viewed by anyone before) the page may load rather slow (perhaps a minute), so please stay patient while it is loading, and do not refresh the page until it is completed.

In fact the list of wildcards will be longer. First of all there is also Florent Pascal having the same result in FIM as the 10th of the list. And then, I am not yet sure how to handle performances with the same result in the top 10 - not sure whether each of them should occupy its own position, or whether I should merge same performances to a single position. From the formulation in the rules it is not entirely clear, but the merging sounds more logical (and possibly was done so in the past years). I am still waiting confirmation from the Board, and if the merging is to be used, I'll post the updated list.

Hi Igor, no, unfortunately currently you can only filter by individual years - always only one at a time. Adding a filter for a date range wouldn't be too difficult to implement, but I did not want to make the interface too difficult for the normal user, so the years can be currently only selected from the drop-down select box.

I was already considering, though, adding an advanced interface for more complex look-ups - so I will probably add the possibility of the starting and ending date for any report. But it is possible I will have to port the entire data to another database system, because I am already encountering serious performance limits in some cases, so it may take some time. However, if anyone needs some type of report urgently, just let me know - in many cases I may be able to run some reports manually, so can send them to you without coding them into the website interface. Integrating them into the website takes usually much more time and testing.

This feature: Sorting by dates would come very handy for the Danish election which, until now, includes all perfomances until X months before the competition starts. When we have our election rules reviewed in february we will need a date specific update... Thank you for all the work put into this!

Wildcard count
15 France
14 NZ
12 Sweden
11 Denmark
9 Japan

BTW, after looking at the rules, I see that it is not specified how to select the first 10 athlets. Often several athlets have the same performance. In a competition the order is in such case given by the AP-RP difference, and by penalty (if there is any). But it is almost impossible doing it in the ranking (at least at the current state), because a big part of organizers sends incomplete data (if any), often missing the AP and sometimes even the penalty values.

So there is an alternative list with same results grouped together to the same position. The resulting list is then quite a bit longer in some disciplines. I do not know yet what the AIDA Board will select, so please do not consider this to be the official list:

Also paradoxally, individual record attempts are excluded from the wildcards, so it can happen that the best freedviver does not get any wildcard. This year it is not an issue, since the only individual WR were the CNF records of Will, but he did the best competition result anyway. In the automatically generated wildcard list the record attempts are currently incorrectly included, but the result would be the same anyway.

OK, so I added filtering by a date range, but for now there is no field in the menu for it yet. You have to enter the dates directly into the URL manually. And it also does not work with the simplified "brief" ranking, but only with the full reports. So you will have to run it for each discipline and gender separately.

This is an example:
http://apnea.cz/ranking.html?md:best+CNF+M+DK+3+beg:2010-07-01+end:2011-06-30

Legend of the arguments in the URL:
md:best - show only the best performance of each competitor
CNF - discipline
M - gender (M/F, or leave it out for both)
DK - country code (must be in uppercase)
3 - number of lines to display
beg:2010-07-01 - starting date (yyyy-mm-dd)
end:2011-06-30 - ending date (included in the report)

You can also select all the parameters (except of the dates) in the menu, click the the permalink (right above the menu), and just attach the starting and ending dates.

I will add fields for a more user-friendly entering of the dates later directly into the menu, but it will probably take a while before I find time for it.

Thanks Trux! Everything makes it so much easier now - how software should work in a perfect world! :-)

Have implemented the national ranking here... its really smart with the dates feature, trux - thank you!

Our selection is made from results made in the past year + present year until 3 month before the official competition starting date. Well I guess you can more or less the content of this page on our national page...

Danish rank for depth WC

I wonder what other nations do? How do you select the athletes?

I've now added the possibility to enter the date range more comfortably and more user friendly directly through the menu. Specifying the dates in the address works too, but you can now select the option "dates" in the Year drop-down menu. When selected, two new fields will appear instead of the select box. You can either enter the starting and ending dates manually, or more comfortably you can pick them from the calendar that pops up when you access the respective field. To come back to the Year select box, delete both dates, or go to the starting page again.

Also the Competitor and Competition search fields have now enhanced functionality - I've added an auto-complete function that searches in the database as you type into the field and offer matching suggestions. When you pick up one of the suggestions, the respective page loads automatically. It should make the searches much more comfortable and faster, avoiding many misspellings.

Since we're on the subject, is it not time to call it something else?

Wild cards are given to athletes who have not qualified for a competition, but are still believed to be able to do good in the competition.

In my opinion, the top athletes from last year's ranking are certainly amongst the most qualified for the Worlds.

How about "directly qualified"?

Cheers!
Christian
