jayke, I think you mentioned building a small gun of about 700cm long?
You can use lots of different types of wood to achieve this but perhaps the best ones would be - No1 Teak or Iroko - No 2 Mahogany or Utily.
You could try Oak or virtually any other hardwood but most folk stick to teak & that is what I recommend.
Cedar is unusual in that its a soft hardwood! Cedar is classed as a hardwood but the actually timber is soft to work with however it does glue up very well but I still would not recommend it as a first gun build material.
You need to use three pieces of teak glued together with a waterproof glue.
So first of all you need a plan of your finished gun so you can get the three pieces cut to the right size. You need to know what the finished dimensions will be & then divide the width by three, ie if your finished gun will be 40mm wide you need to allow a little say 5mm & divided that figure by 3.
So you would need to find three 15mm strips of teak.

My friend had a mahogany oiled gun but it dried out fast in sun and sea water. He would sand it and re- oil but it just seemed to get heavier with oil
but never looked good for long. How about using a Tung oil finish?

Teak is great, also IROKO or Mohagny,
you have to think to make a 40 mm x 40mm x gun lenght ( from triger to the front and + 20 cm to the back.
after having a good piece of wood , (3 to 4 pieces of wood glue with epoxy resin or pu glue )
oil only teak or afromosia. mohagny has to be coated with resin or vernish
