I always wait for the yawn before starting a dive. I try to start my dive immediately afterwards. It may be a sign of mild hypocapnia, who knows, but whatever it is, it is an awesome feedback mechanism for me, to tell me when the breathe-up is over. It is like a clockwork mechanism to indicate your CO2 level. If I start the dive right after the first yawn, the mechanics/feeling of the dive are the same every time. If I start the dive without a yawn or long after, the dive has a random result. So if nothing else it helps with consistency.
I know Trevor Hutton also likes to yawn just before diving (and he caught a fish at 60m...)
If I come up from a pretty deep recreational dive, and want to quickly go down again, the yawn requirement prevents me from starting the dive too early. There is no way to speed up the appearance of the yawn.
