can someone out there recomend a good speargun for hunting the kelp pattys in so. cali. for yellow tail ive never hunted water deeper than 30ft but i would like to try something new what are the basics that i should be looking for in a gun for this type of hunting.

Its beginning to drive me crazy that people ask questions specific to SoCal, but don't put them in the California-West Coast forum. Does anyone even know its there? Blue water is world wide, but you are asking a SoCal question, and SoCal divers might be the best source of an answer.

But sorry for venting- I guess that's my personal problem.

Yellowtail under paddies can be pretty stupid, especially if in big schools. Some people use Euro style guns in the 120 cm range. I use multiband Wong hybrids from 55" to 60", but then I've shot a yellowtail with my 50" three band hybrid when it was new and I wanted to test it out. But then there are a bunch of guys on Spearboard lately that think they need big multiband guns from 63" to 68" so as to get the spooky fish. No matter how big the gun, there will always be a fish just out of its range.

My recommendation would be something in the 55" to 60" range. Then if you ever got a chance to hunt white sea bass, it would work for that too.

That 30 pounder I'm holding in the first photo was taken last summer with a 55" hybrid. The 27 pounder that my friend Daniel is holding in the second photo was taken this spring with a 60" hybrid.

Please come over and take a look at the CA forum. We are lonely there, and I want more people to read the reports I've been posting. :)

sorry for posting in the wrong place wont happen again just thought that i could get strait to the point in this forum and i wanted to see what people were using in other places not just socal but thank you very much for the info it was very helpfull. i read your post often and have always enjoyed them ive also seen you on spearboard but they wont activate my acount yet for some reason

so would you think that the aimrite venom in 110 to 130cm would be a good start. --- i will also ask this in the california thread asswell to get others opinion and to keep you happy

Please don't post in the CA section with CA questions just to keep me happy. I was just making a suggestion that I thought might be truly useful, but if you think its a bad idea, then suit yourself.

I had this idea that people who dive for certain fish in a certain area might be the best source for those fish in that area, but I could be all wrong. Maybe people who dive blue water for tuna off of the Azores or blue water off of Australia for black marlin will have a better idea what gun is best for yellowtail under kelp paddies in Southern California. Anything is possible.

Edit- are you using the same user name on Spearboard? Let me know, and I'll email Tony Grogan and ask him to get your account active. I don't know what the problem is, but it often takes a nudge to get accounts activated.

yea i use the same user name on spearboard thankyou. and the california board was a good idea and ive spent alot of time there already

OK, I just emailed the Spearboard owner and asked him to check on your account activation. If he is not out of town, he usually fixes it within 24 hours. Let me know if you haven't seen anything in a day or so.

I don't understand why an email is necessary, but a lot of other people seem to have had the same problem and since they see me on both boards, have asked me to give Tony a nudge.

Yes,
I and many others had to e-mail the SpearBoard admin from an off site account to get the SpearBoard accounts activated.

Where can I find the California-West Coast forum? I'd like to read up on some techniques as well. Thank you

So Cal is a pretty big area. Could you be more specific? In Orange County, Spear America in Irvine carries a wide range of guns for cheap to stupid expensive. But basically you get what you pay for. There is a Spear America in Torrance too. Another possibility is buying on line from Mako Spearguns. They have a nice selection of guns and cut out the middleman markup.
