I thought spearfishing is prohibited in egypt. Anyway i feel sorry for the fish. Killing such a big old fish is like cutting down a tree. Plus they're virtually helpless, sitting in their caves waiting for the first best spearo to kill them. Veeeeery sporty :thankyou . Would give ya more of a workout to shoot at a 50kg sack of sand and howl it aboard. I just returned from a 3week freediving and spearfishing vacation in greece. Every damn punk going into the sea there has a speargun on him, of course they shoot all groupers they see. Easiest catch. I saw groupers every day there, could have killed dozens, so what? I just don't shoot at fish who wait in a cave. Try shooting moving fish, fish that swim about, fast fish, this is much more challenging and sporty. And leave the groupers alone, it takes them dekades to grow big. If everyone starts shooting them thei're gone in 10years tops.

agreed but i think alot of people wont understand, i'd much rather see a photo/video of this fish underwater, dont get me wrong i enjoy spearfishing but i target species that are plentiful, grow quickley and breed quickly (some groupers will only turn femalle when they get BIG) this is why spearfishing groupers is illegal in my country.

This is a very thorny issue. In the Med the grouper was always the jewel in the crown for the spearfisherman in much the same way as bass is for the UK spearo. In Spain anyway, this decimated the inshore grouper fishery and you very rarely find a decent sized specimen in under 30m anymore. In the protected areas such as Medas Island you can now see huge specimens swimming in relatively shallow water. Some people think that big Grouper are an easy target to hit and therefore no sport to catch, although others will point out that freediving to 20-30M and then seeing AND retrieving a large specimen is indeed worthy sport. What makes me mad is seeing 1-2kg Grouper being shot - leave them alone!!!!!! I'm sure this thread will get a few people going...........

Chefkoch,

ITS OBVIOUS YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT GROUPER HUNTING, I HAVE DOUBTS THAT YOU KNOW WHAT IS SPEARFISHING AT ALL. PLEASE SHUT YOUR MOUTH CLOSE. EVEN AT 8 METERS ITS NOT EASY TO RETRIVE THIS FISH OUT FROM THE CAVE. AND IF YOU THINK GROUPERS JUST SIT IN THE CAVE AND WAITING SOMEBODY TO SHOOT THEMSELF, YOU ARE THE BISGGEST FOOOOLL HERE!!!

DON'T MAKE COMMENTS THINGS ABOUT YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT, I AM PRETTY SURE THE GROUPERS HERE ARE TWICE MORE CLEVER THAN YOU rofl

Looks like a good catch to me but I know nothing about spearing grouper other than from books or films. However, just one point. What did you do with it? Was it eaten? Are they any good to eat?
Personally I am much more into what happens to fish once you've killed them. This is why I no longer take part in competitions (even if the catch is eaten) and for myself there is no such thing as "sport" if you kill a creature and then dump its carcass.
I love to spearfish but by definition that means that I rob other creatures of their life. The urge to hunt is in my blood and given free rein I could easily kill everything I came across but I consider myself more human than animal and so I control my passion. For me it comes down to justification and at this point in my life that means can I (or someone else) eat the fish and even then does it feel right.
Anyway that's my thoughts - no actually it's my way of life!

Your Right There Spaniard, its boiled my blood. :vangry :vangry :vangry
1st of all NİCE ONE MARWAN, thats a very nice Grouper you caught yourselves.
2nd. i will not get wound up here because everyone is entitled to their opinion :ko .and to be very honest that is the type of Liberal opinion one expects from the Germans . every man/Woman is entitled to Fish his/Her Fish, Drink his/her Drink and S**g his/her woman/Man as long as its Legal(had to make that politicaly correct). so stop putting down others for their sport, Personaly i see no reason to lay face down in a swimming pool to see how long i can, or finning down 30+ meters and just looking around. but that is just my opinion.

Ps. i think Murats a bit Pi***d off.

The fishing of different species can and should obviously be controlled using regulations like quota, min/max sizes, protected zones, allowed/forbidden seasons etc. This is a proven concept that actually works. The argument that something is less or more sporting or ethical is not only unproductive as moral is subjective, it is also irrelevant. So you don't enjoy hunting grouper, so what? Don't do it then. Other people clearly enjoy it so they will do it. The reason grouper is outfished in areas hasn't got to do with ethics, it is because the fishing hasn't been regulated well.

Thanks for the comments guys, at least the constructive ones, cheers Murat.

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but To be objective, I might think twice before shooting one again of this size (if i ever see one again) . On a more positive note, it went to good cause, we did eat the fish, it was good, it fed 15 people.

As far as legality is concerned, the law is mainly intended to protect the rich coral areas, thats where you get many scuba divers, hence tourism etc..., these areas are natural reserves and protected, we do not fish there, we fish in other areas, mostly in the Med. where such corals do not exist, or the north of the red sea, where petroleum industry/overfishing with nets/trawlers has left littel to be preserved, which is where we got this fish.

It is my belief that as long as you dont waste what you catch it is good sport. Think of it this way, this fish could have been brought to surface by a lucky angler or even trawling. I have caught a few sizeable groupers trawling with a boat.

Cheers everyone.

P.S. Portfiner, you must teach me how to do that man or else you will have to do it everytime I post a pic.

so if a fish takes 20yrs to grow to a breeding size its ok to spear it so long as you eat it? thats the only problem i have with shooting these large fish, if they grew fast and all the fish could reproduce i say go for it (still not my cup of tea there a bit slow and dosile, not to mention there illegal to spear).

before posting about breeding, ecological balance etc.. go and learn some info.

This sized grouper is a male no doubt, after certain size groupers change their sexuality. Not sure but may be after 6-7 kg??? This size grouper does not spawn eggs and eat other smaller groupers as well which is breeding. So shooting this size grouper is actually making favor to the environment.

Hiya

Marwaan, STUNNING fish!!!! Well done!!!

Don't be too worried about all the negative comments. Most likely sprouted from the usual green eye'd jealousy syndrome!!

Regards
miles

By the way Marwan, we don't have this species in here. Is that white on black spotted species? think Americans calls them jewfish?

If it's a jewfish (now officially called goliath grouper in Florida) than it's only a baby. They grow up to 800-1,000+ lbs (~450 kilo). In Florida they’re illegal to shoot. We see plenty of them everywhere. I've counted as many as 16 on a wreck in a single freedive. I've lost more speared fish to jewfish than all other sea creatures combined (sharks, eels, barracuda, etc.). A 400 lb'r can do quite a number to a 7mm shaft. At least one good thing about jewfish is they don't have much in the teeth department so if you have enough breath and can catch them before they get too deep into structure you can usually win the tug-a-war and get your fish back.

Cheers Miles,
Murat, I think the Americans call them Jew fish like you said, In egypt they are called arabian grouper. Underwater, they are light brown with black dots, they get a little darker after fishing.
Funny enough i got another one about 3 weeks ago from a spot close by, also at about 8m depth and was 9kg in size. I used a riffe C1 gun this time 7mm spear with 2 16mm rubbers.

What you need to do, if your using windows, open the file (picture) with something like Microsoft paint, then click file from the menu bar, then "save as" then from the pop up box change the file type from bmp to jpg, this saves a new copy of the picture in a jpeg format; then the picture should upload to the system
Awsome fish by the way I should think they were 15 very happy people that ate it

Murat
i have speared some groupers in the med as well in our north coast, the biggest was 7 kg, in terms of taste the red sea groupers tasted a bit nicer as they are more tender.
Allison,
Thanks for the tip, ill try it next time
Cheers

Marwan / Alison - here are some other methods :

Use the open source GIMP tool :
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

It is like photoshop but free...

Or use Adobe Photoshop Elements (free with most printers / scnners these days)

Or but the full version or buy Macromedia Fireworks....

Nothing to do with groupers I know but he did ask

My mate Pete came face to face with one while diving somewhere in South America - he was just looking around and thought it was an awesome animal...
