Advice on inflatables & outboards

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Checked up with the maritime dept gwynedd council. £20 all in for up to 10hp. Or 15hp without the stickers on it:)

Awesome mate! Sounds perfect!

Does that mean I can launch absolutely anywhere I like? Pwllheli, Abersoch beach etc etc

Met the guy selling the outboard today - lovely piece of kit! Starts up first time, pumps water beautifully... really pleased with it. Can't believe how something so big can be so light, certainly won't be a issue to carry around.

I was very surprised how quiet it is, I was expecting it to be really noisy. Now all I need it the boat to go with it! Many thanks for everyone's input, massively appreciated!

Just cover them with gaffer like an off road motorbike.....

Try and get a beat up old engine cover and replace it for the one that's on there. Not only can you "disguise" the power rating, but it also looks less desirable to thieves. When you come to sell it, you have a shiny cover to put back on.

Hi Brosiedon , I have been considering getting an inflatable and remembered this thread and was wondering if you got a boat to go with that engine , what did you get and how is it working out ? Terry ...

Hi Terry,

I did get an inflatable to go with the engine - unfortunately, due to work (and living 3 hours from the coast), I've only manage to go spearing twice this season. A shocking performance.

I saw a nice 3.3m, airdeck on GumTree for £400, it was literally 5 minutes from me and looked perfect. I was going away for a weeks spearing with with my buddy, DaffydRees so due to the lady being away, I arranged to pick it up the day before I left. You can already tell where this is going...

Anyway, when I arrived, the boat wasn't in as great condition as suggested in the advert - it had a leak in the deck, the pump was busted and to top it all off - it was a 2.7 meter, not a 3.3m. Perfect. I bargained the woman down to £80 and took it - it wasn't breaking the bank and I didn't want us to be without a boat for our planned week.

We patched the boat up and had to take it (twice!) to the local marina to get it inflated - we encountered numerous dramas along the way, including the transom being too thin for the outboard, the tiller gear control detaching itself and us having to row back to shore, the airdeck not being strong enough to take the power from the engine, the floor wobbling like a jelly under power, huge trouble getting it to plane, having no idea how to use the choke to get the outboard started, thinking the outboard had died when we accidentally shut it off in gear and couldn't get it started again (more rowing back to shore) AND FINALLY the clip for the fuel line breaking which unfortunately, was game over for the boat.

Was it a pain in the arse? Yes. Was it great fun? Absolutely! It was a steep learning curve getting used to it but I feel a lot more confident with it now than I did at the start.

Unfortunately I haven't used the boat since June which is purely my own fault with work. The boat I bought wasn't fit for the outboard and I'll be upgrading it next season to solid hulled boat on a trailer which will hopefully see a lot more use than my current vessel has.

The idea of a boat you can roll up and put in your boot is great, the reality is that it's time consuming and annoying. I'd very much recommend getting one on a trailer or at a minimum having launching wheels. Hope that helps in some way! :)

Great reply and pics !! Yes I have no doubt a 15 hp would be too much for an inflatable with air floor !! What make was the boat ? Getting the price down to £80 from £ 400 is not haggling it is called mugging !! lol . I am considering a Ribeye 260 or 280 , they have a rigid alloy hull and are very light , and a 6hp yamaha to power it . I want to keep as light as possible as I dive by myself virtually all the time although I still find my kayak ideal for my needs . Cheers .. Terry...

Hi Terry.

This is my setup a bombard aerotec 380 with honda 10hp 4 stroke.

Its a very light setup and easy to launch down slipways as well as sandy beaches. I tend to pull the boat to the shoreline then put the spearo gear in before entering the water as its far easier.

It fits on the roof of my punto BUT with a bravo electric pump its a doddle to inflate if you prefer.

With just me and the gear in it zips along at 15mph, with another spearo onboard it does about 8 maybe 10mph.

AND the best part is the outboard is so light on fuel I use less than 5 liters on a full days spearing!

Hi Scott, that looks a nice set up ! a 380 is more than enough room for 1 person , but that engine is a pretty hefty lump for getting in and out of a car by myself ( about 45 kilo ) I think . I know in the honda and yamaha range there is a big step up in weight and price over 5-6 hp and I really do want to keep it light and simple , will probably be trawling through E BAY over the coming months !! Terry...

A little 3.2 avon with a solid hull and 6hp will be a great bit of kit then mate. I had an inflatable 2.95mt from trago!!! and a 15hp evinrude and the thing flew.
