That was quite a long and complicated post, but, it made my head hurt:head

Don't know what the hell way is right and what be left, and that is why i am glad spearguns are rigged ambidexterous. That is why i don't believe a word scientists or politicians say unless, of course, they are telling the truth and they say so from the bottom of their cold dead hearts.

Man, this is all too heavy. I'm going to look at the pictures.

I am not a baby owl and I don't appreciate living ankle deep in s**t the way they do. Clean house, everyone, whatever your reasons, clean house!

Baby owls don't like it either. Some jump out of the nest before their flight feathers have grown in :)

I'm glad that the environment is a major concern for many people, but unfortunately, hysteria fills pockets and does not necessarily result in a superior way of doing things. Just look at the Spotted Owl. Thousands in the timber industry lost their jobs over the spotted owl, but guess what? The spotted owl was never truly in danger of extinction. I heartily agree that the timber industry needed to modify its practices in order to protect habitat and especially soils. However, the spotted owl legislation was a knee-jerk reaction to a perceived threat to a little-known species. Those rarely make scientific sense and are rarely scientifically-supported, but they sure do make people feel good. They end up tilting at windmills because they do not know what is really happening, or what should really be done.

I do not know Gore's true viewpoint, why he made this movie, or whether he is an angel or a devil. I do know that frightening people about environmental issues often ends up with people searching for fast and easy solutions, like 'don't cut trees'. That leaves so many variables out of the equation that resulting opinion and policy are flawed and misguided. His lack of personal knowledge on environmental science is a huge red flag. Someone who does not understand the fundamental scientific issues would have to be extremely objective to present a relevant opinion. Who knows what he/she did to the data, how it was skewed, how it was collected, and what it truly means? Scientific procedure exists for a reason, and when a non-scientist presents potentially significant data, it behooves the recipient to be very critical. We also cannot expect Gore to be able to present a factual and comprehensive viewpoint as a non-scientist when even the scientists themselves don't fully understand what's going on.

I'm writing this because my schooling and profession are in the thick of environmental controversy, and I face ignorance and hysteria on a regular basis. I see what these things do to people and to the environment that they are meant to protect. I also see the physical effects of rash and ignorant policy-making, and it's sickening. Research the Meagram fire and the Angora fire, the conditions leading up to those events, and what happened after they occurred. Read about what happened to Arrowhead National Forest and Big Bear, and what's happening all up and down the Sierra Nevada mountain range. I can recommend books and documentaries that would make you sick because of the duplicity and shocked like you've had a bucket of ice water thrown in your face.

Gore and his intentions amount to less than a beer fart in a whirlwind. I care about my world, and I hate to see unsound theories elevated to the level of gospel truth. It hurts us all. Forget Gore and focus on really knowing what's going on and acting wisely.

The Spotted owl is just a barred Owl in a very slightly different outfit. They deserve some accomodation - but they are not fragile.

What matters is staying straight yourself - and bringing that into everything you touch.

'Who cooks for you..?'

(Batray - you shouldn't talk about your ass that way)

If you say so....I hate to disappoint. Edited :)

Spotted owls are a trip. They are territorial and have little fear of humans, so they are easy to research. I got to search for some and feed them mice this summer. Barred owls are taking over spotted owl range, some say because of poor management. Who knew:hmm

some say my beer farts are unmanaged, territorial, and deadly to mice.

Got to keep a 'screech owl' for a couple of days here in maryland. Awesome personality. Saw someone 'wing' it when it was flying over the road early in the morning. Stayed with me for a couple of nights till it decided it was strong enough to fly. Snubbed me though and wouldn't eat anything. Hope its fat and happy for the winter.

I think [relatively speaking] that people get all charmed and fascinated with some aspect of their world and want to feel a connection. Everyone is a native american [they call it indian] when the pow wow comes to town. But until you get a chance to view the WHOLE of your world rather than the details alone, we can't understand. Mr Gore or any other student/proponent of any detail of the whole must of course specialize in something [beer farts] without becoming a blahdeblahblah stereotype and therefore as much use as 'tits on a boar hog'. Unless of course someone's into that.

I did a stint of raptor rehab - lived with a few little screech owls, helped a barred owl get it's wings back - watched a great horned owl do a perfect two-point water landing after a few months of rehab. It swam to shore and avoided landing on water after that.

One night I took one of the screech owls out and just sat in a field. About eight of the cats that lived in a barn we had there showed up and sat all around us in a perfect circle probably 30 feet across just minding their own business.

Its true about the connection thing - it seems like may people start to sense some sort of intelligence in the natural world and immediately project all kinds of neurosis all over it.

There is certainly intelligence involved. People often don't understand that there is also resilience in the natural world. Try and tell some environmentalists that people can be beneficial for the forest, and they'll freak out. Tell them that managing the forest can be healthy and they refuse to listen. Some go so far as to believe that humans should die before a tree or animal. That's scary.

Then we should help them accomplish their goal . . . personally!

(Sorry, I'm not in the best of moods. It's probably the Santa Anas blowing that cause it.)

BatRay that is a very well written piece. My wife is in medicene and I was in the food business before i sold my company. The total lack of knowledge that people have about their heath is as scary as the total lack of knowledge of the world they live in. Sad to say but its human nature to believe whatever is on TV. Many a fortune is made that way.

I just read the OpEd piece by Paul Krugman posted earlier by Bill. One problem I have with it is that the author implies that whoever questions even some of Al Gore's assertions or conclussions is a rabid Republican bushist, and of course that is not so. Even some European conservationists criticized some parts of the documentary, and a judge in the United Kingdom found nine mistakes or inaccuracies and ordered that them should be pointed out before showing the film to high school students. I believe it is a good thing that Gore tries to raise concern about the environment, but it is not easy to separate the message from the messenger when the message is so politically charged and the messenger is a politician. And I don't despise Gore. As a matter of fact, I would rather have him as president than any of the candidates seeking the nomination from his party.

Here is a movie that is completely untrue riddled with falsehoods and yet still because its a movie people believe it. But then people believe that bottled (Tap) water is healther then tap water out of the tap and are willing to happily pay more for it the they do for gasoline.
Sometimes i think that the fish i hunt are smarter then people. Oh and i have pill that cures everything its untested unproven so i will make a fortune selling as a herbal cure . lol A freind of mine made his money doing this, I was to honest and got into the real food busniess. lol yes there is a fool born every minute. Al Gore has proven that cliche again to be very true.

Sometimes it is. I was unfortunate enough to be living, and working, in Milwaukee when we got hit with crypto a few years ago. Besides becoming sick for a few days, along with thousands of others, we had 85 people die from drinking said water.

ocean_314 - Gore's documentary - while not without flaws - is not completely untrue. One could easily argue that it is essentially true - in that there is a need to return to greater awareness of human impact on our natural environment. An awareness which has been under direct attack by industry and politicians since the 70s - incidentally employing tactics similar to those that are employed in Gore's piece - and to a larger degree by other certain other environmental organizations. Which, regrettably, makes them easy to discredit and distracts from the very real issues.

My tap water - without proper filtration, would be much more dangerous than bottled water - it has too much iron which is very harmful to the liver.
My wife vacationed on Little Cayman and got quite ill because she forgot and brushed her teeth with tap water.
A fried of mine - who travels extensively - avoids drinking the water in some cities in china because it can be fatal.

Not directly related, but I noticed that you can see the smoke trail from all of our fires here in SoCal:

Geostationary Image Browser -- SSEC

Switch the view to visible.

Firefighters are having a real tough time right now, winds are still 50mph / 80kmh, and humidity is 8%. Local media is saying that at least one of our 11 fires is arson :vangry.

Arsonists belong to two different categories: 1) mentally disturbed 2) scum of the Earth. If it wasn't so tempting to slow roast the latter over a charcoal BBQ, one might feel sympathy for the former. Hunt 'em aaaallll down!

Arsonists are perverts who like to admire their handiwork and do other things. I won't go into that.

The drinking water in my hometown used to taste good, but it has been so filled with chlorine and flouride that I purchased a shower filter and filtration pitchers. Chlorine irritates the skin, causes breakouts, and causes respiratory problems. I know, because those things go away when I stop using chlorinated water. My hair, skin, and nails all look better when I am not exposed to chlorine and flouride. 314 you talk about being in the food industry. I bet you have some real horror stories about what really goes on with our food supply.

Ok how about American tap water. Qualifying things here. If you want to know what a lot of scientist think of the reason that the artic ice is melting and not the Antarctic ice which is increasing, it’s the pollution that china is putting out. To get an idea how much pollution china is putting into the 30% of the air pollution in San Francisco come from china, think of what that massive about of air pollution is doing to the artic.
Oh and some bottled tap water which is all bottled water is tap water run through a some filters, having been in a couple of the plants watching it being bottled, has also sickened people when it got contaminated. And if your pipes are bad or old that your tap water comes through its much cheaper just to put a filter on your facet.
Now about Garlic i got paid to help market that first we tried it as a ingredent then we hit upon the idea as selling it a s a cure all..and low an behold...doesnt work..but man did we sell a ton of Garlic. felt so guilty i went legit.

Yesterday's 60 Minutes had a piece on the increasing size and ferocity of forest fires in the Western United States.

In the last 10 years, we are getting bigger and hotter fires than any time in recorded history. They are burning higher on mountains than they ever have before, destroying forests that were thought to be immune because of altitude. The fire season is now 2 months longer than it used to be. They are burning down through soil to rock so that forests may never again regenerate in those areas, or at least for many hundreds of years.

When asked if he believed in global warming, a fire fighter chief replied that you wouldn't be able to find anyone on the front lines of fire fighting who didn't believe in it.

Admittedly, he wasn't asked whether the change was due to human activity, so he didn't comment on that.

But it seems that the scientific community has made a good enough case that we should consider whether its true. It would be hell to be wrong.

Isn't bottled water such a wonderful concept. In my view it epitomises our consumer attitudes. I sell 750ml bottles for $2.80 in my shop and it sells as well, if not better than coke or any of those other popular soft drinks. What is funny is that there is a river flowing behind the shop which is perfectly healthy to drink from. People are buying the idea of 'clean'.
The best water I have ever tasted has been in the mountains. You take some snow melted by the sun. Give it a couple of thousand feet to drop where along the way it can gather all sorts of minerals and tannins from the forest and you end up with something that tastes sweeter than anything else on earth. Water flavoured by nature itself! MMMMMMMMM:inlove

By the way if you are passing by and need your water bottle filled I will happily do so from the tap free of charge.
