any views on how much a few extra kilos in bodyweight affect freediving performance?

could a dynamic benefit from increased momentum from the walls?

Hi Ari - by 'a few extra kilos' I am assuming you mean around the post-Easter fat around the belly from the roast lamb? :) (as opposed to a few extra kilos of muscle)

Apart from helping with cold in open-water I don't really see how extra weight (in terms of fat) can help with a dynamic. If I'm not mistaken more fat means more boyancy too so you'd need more weights too which shouldn't help.

In terms of pushing off the walls in theory I guess it might help but it depends on many things - probably the most important is whether the extra kilos result in your body having a more hydrodynamic shape or not. I guess in theory it also depends how hard you can push off the wall with the extra weight.

The above of course is all theory - in practice if you are talking a couple of kilos I doubt it'll make much difference :)

well, actually, i am more like 7kg overweight... being 1.91 and weighing 97...I will be 42 soon with an office job and enjoy eating! and i am not sure i want to make the sacrifices needed to get the weight down :naughty

on the other hand, i do have aspirations to improve in comp freediving and i wonder how much of a drawback the extra weight is... :crutch

I have no idea but if your fitness level is ok, again not sure how big the difference will be. I think the main difference would be in the hydrodynamics if anything..

I think it's not so much the weight per se that is the problem - while that my not make a huge difference I suspect that if your diet is not right, it will make a difference. I am sure you can find lots of info on which foods are good for Freediving etc

You aren't doing too badly (just a few NR etc lol) so if (like me) you like eating whatever you fancy and aren't willing to sacrifice that there's not much point in worrying about it I guess :-) still worth looking into it though, might be some easy/quick wins and there's other things like blood pressure etc that might come into it.

In short: I dont know the answer to your question :-)
