BC Spearing Trip: Round Two!

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I know that most of the people on this forum are very ethical but Eric is a deep freediver and not a spearo so he may of not thought about what would happen to the fish if he had to leave the bottom early. I just put it out there in case he or someone else hadn't thought of it.
I hope someone is succesful this year with hunting Halibut.

I think people misunderstood. My plan was/is to pole spear the halibut at 30m, and eat the tail off while the thing thrashes about. Then I will forcefully disengage the spear and leave the beast down there. I call it catch and release, except better, since it doesn't require a fishing license. I always leave the fish's face untouched so it still looks pretty and can find a wife down there, somewhere.... :)

Eric, just say when. Gotta keep it to 120ft tho. The video housing is only rated to that. The camera will be rolling, so remember to throw your head back a few times during the battle so there can be no question as to who the warrior is.:martial Also, I can sacrifice my JBL polespear for a great moment in which the spear breaks, leaving you with no choice but to subdue the beast by hand and/or teeth.

i'm so looking forward to this

After we all work through the killing and eating stage - I'd like to suggest a competition wherein we ask the fish meaningful questions of an intensely personal nature.

check out my latest Walleye stalking results - got some pretty cool shots yesterday.

I guess you haven't seen the Temple of Doom technique we've been practicing at 40m, deep in the marine protected areas of the Lower Mainland. With each beating halibut heart we consume the more we can understand the inner lives of our prey. Just pray that in the darkness you don't get mistaken for a prize halibut!

thump, thump......thump, thump..... thump,thump.....thump.....thump......thump ....thum---

Hey guys,

Can we get an updated head count/commitment to the dates. Let's get the dates firm so everyone who need to arrange can proceed with arrangement. These dates are not the easiest for me this year, but I am going to cut off a pound of flesh to pull it off, but need the dates firm. I agree that this is the right time of year to do it, which is one of the reasons we picked this same time last year. Basically, from re-reading the posts it sounds like the consensus is as follows:

Location of base camp: Telegraph cove campground

Diving locations: Telegraph area/Broughton Strait including plumber islands (killer walls, crazy currents and life, harbor seals), haddington island (ling cod stacked like cordwood, need I say more :t ). Halibut expedition, location to be determined. Day excursion up to Port Hardy/God's pocket (likely no spearing here, but one of Cousteau's fav's).

Timing/Dates: Late June (for good reasons previously mentioned). Arrive during the weekend and spend a week diving. Both the weeks June 18-22 and June 24-30 have been proposed. I think Colin/Jim are set on 24-30.

Activities: Eating our spoils. Slug fritter workshop. Glow stick dance. Pissing off whale lady. "Lord of the flies" style chanting around head of ling cod. Eating our spoils.

Who agrees for June 24-30?
Any details you would like to change/add?

lee

Our work rotations will be up in the air for a while yet. But regardless, THWAP!

Iceselkie & DeepRN are a go.

That's two green lights from the BC Blindsiders.

Well - here's the skinny. Quite a few years ago - when we started to realize what we were into with our autistic son, Guy - my lovely wife Kathy gave up her job to care for him. Last Spring, about half-way into the TC trip - The latest experiment with his meds went way south and things were very difficult. The upshot of all this is several-fold - A: We're a single income family with an Autistic kid and a kid in College - so we can't do two of these things B: We can't vacation together because we're the only ones qualified to work with Guy. C: Kath hasn't been anywhere in 12 years!

As a result I decided to forgo my place in the upcoming impossible-but-for-unnaccountable-fortuitousness-of-the-third-kind adventure. About this time Claire and I were also invited to go to Little Cayman. To my mind hot water is for cooking but, as both options were inexplicably feaseable I put them both on a plate for the ladies. Come to find out Kath had been having dreams of reading a thick book on russian history in a tropical paradise.

I am bummed - but very happy to be able to do this for Kath. There is no one known to me who is more deserving of some down time.

I'll miss the very rare and excellent company - as well as the diving - but will be there in spirit. Even now I am preparing strange asynchronous events to mark my presence among you.

Chris,

Who is going to protect me from the Whale Lady? :martial

I'm saddened that you and Claire (original TC crew members) will not be attending :( . Colin and I will dispense shots of Cactus Juice and we shall all have toast in you honor! If events change for you in the near future, please do reconsider.

Fondueset pretends that he isn't coming, acting as if he has a choice in the matter... I suppose he is conveniently forgetting the blood bond that all original telegraph trip members took.... once together ALWAYS together... regardless of circumstance -- life, death, the same.

Bummer, Chris. Although I'm glad that Kath will get to enjoy some Caymanian R&R.

Count me in for the week of 24-30 June.

...I remember a pungent stew made by Colin and Tyler - something about pituitary of ling - and strange moss - figures undulating in the firelight, Eric standing motionless for hours amidst the chaotic shadows cast by the fire, Jim twitching in fetal position and laughing with a slug held close to his face, Lee's erie howling echoing from somewhere in the underbrush, Gabe and Brianna cackling from high in the trees, Pete writing, allways writing with that knowing glint in his eye - made somehow demonic by the orange face paint. Then what seemed to be some type of medical examination by a beautiful Swedish woman with huge, irisless eyes.. Suddenly I was 14 meters down looking at an F1. After that I just tried to act normal.

You forgot to mention the mushrooms Tyler found and added to the stew. I recall making my peace with dead ex-girlfriends, .................of course the next morning I remembered that I don't have any dead ex-girlfriends.

Ahhhh, ..........good times! :friday

Jim you really are not doing your self any favours admitting your somewhat dubious habits! First it was pot now hallucinogenic mushrooms! (most likely-Philocybe semilanceata)rofl

Philocybe mushrooms are native to the region and pretty easy to find if you know where to look ;)

Yeah, just ask the native islander Tyler!!! :)

Thank God these dates don't interfer with my trip to California for the "Dinah Shore Weeekend" (I dress up like a woman and tell all the girls that I am actually a "Chick with a D!ck" :girlie ).

When I see Rosie O'Donnell, I'm going to punch her! :thankyou
