Best spot for free diving in So Cal?

I'm new to free diving and I'm wondering what the go to spots are in So Cal.

I just want to free dive and explore. I don't spearfish. I only line dove once when I got certified to freedive. It seems silly to get certified but a while ago I wanted to join a freedive group and it was a requirement. I live in the Long Beach area.

Southern California covers a lot of territory. But for instance if you are in the Los Angeles area, the Palos Verdes Peninsula is very popular with spear fishermen. Even if you aren't shooting it might be fun to see big fish.

Diving PV involves going up and down very steep trails but at least you won’t be lugging a big fish. The former world record White Sea bass, 80 pounds, was taken there. It must have been a tough climb.

Here's a photo along with a photo of the current record, 93 pounds. That current record was taken by a guy paddling out on a board at Malibu. At least he didn't have to take it up the cliff.
