Hi there! I have this problem of bleeding inside my nose (i think) when doing skin diving or swimming in the pool doing dynamic apnea. What is it that I'm doing wrong? Is this normal for beginners? Hope someone can enlighten me. Thanks a lot!

I do equalize up to around 5-6 m then the pain start to kick in on my ears ...when that happens i just resurface and try again..

I see...how did you correct the bleeding? is it because of ineffective equalization?

If you would equalize correctly there would be no pain in the ears at any time. If you are interested in freediving or "advanced" snorkeling look out for a local freediving or basic divong club.

You can also watch on youtube a video to equaliszation. Search for Adam Stern Equalization.

Some folks find equalizing extremely difficult or impossible due to their own individual physiology. If your tubes are very small and/or your muscle control around your ears is inadequate then you may not be able to equalize - even with all the training in the world.

@Peter123 @Mark Jeffery Thanks for the suggestion! I've been watching it numerous times, especially the Frenzel method..I can do it on dry practice but upside down..recently I can equalize by combination of pinch, blow and tongue back. I am not successful on pinch tongue back action. A while ago I was equalizing comfortably by pinch, blow and tongue back, but I still notice blood on my mucus, what am I doing wrong? Is it that my nose is too sensitive from pinching? Thanks again!

I'm not sure what the blood is from - it might be from pinching your nose. Do you get nose bleeds even when not diving? Some folks are more prone to nose bleeds in general than others.

I’m a nose bleeder, it can start bleeding from just waking and I’ve been like this from I was a kid. But this has never affected my abilities for eq. I dunno if it is a individual thing since I do it very easy but I have never felt the two are related. From my experience the nose bleed seldom come from far up the sinuses, but rather from the mucous membrane further down.

@SubSub pain that is tolerable from equalizing..but recently I practice dove for 4 m without any pain but still got blood from my mucus..not that bloody but traces of it...

What to do? hehe
E.N.T

A buddy of mine had a similar problem of bleeding after doing duck dives (2-4m) without any pain. He visited an ear, nose, & throat Dr. And had some scar tissue removed from his sinuses and the problme went away.

Equalising shouldn't have any pain, and if there is pain it shouldn't be "tolerated". Stop the descent and end the dive.

Nathan is probably refering to nasal polyps which are quite common, especially if you had a lot of alergies...
It is your best bet to check a specialist, and go on from there...

i might have that i think..because i do encounter sneezing and runny nose when salt/pool water stays in my nose..thanks for that info!

update: no bleeding when multiple dives at 4 m hehe i guess it has something to do with equalization, just recently learned valsava/frenzel , now diving without pain, next is to learn to stay bottom for longer periods :)

Great. Congrats. Don’t forget to buddy up! Most important thing to learn. Safety first.
