Blue Spirit 2006

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
just a quick update. i got an email from seb:

I will be collecting dive data on the energetics and risk of SWB to divers during my stay. Results will be made available over the workshop. Should be interesting results and I suspect highly impacting. Require divers capable of E-diving without fins to 15-20m depth. Divers can only be tested individually.

if you want to participate in this make sure you prepare yourself :)

Hi all,

Roland asked me to provide some additional info on the expts. I'll be undertaking in Dahab.

I'll be doing several and testing wont be restricted to students, but trainers also. Without going into specifics, I'll be collecting info on the energetics and bradycardic DR comparing E- vs. F-dives during unassisted (i.e., no fins) diving; minimum depth 10m). Secondly, I'll also be looking at O2 conservation capability comparing stress vs. no-stress dives. Lastly, I'll be collecting info on the impact of undertaking a static phase on dynamic performance. With the exception of the 2nd experiment all dives will be stress-free dives. Previous E-diving experience is a must for the first experiment and extensive (minimum 2 years) F-diving experience for all expts.

See you there
Seb

hi,

we just spent a great week with seb and are now getting into unassisted diving with john and will.

Two weeks into Blue Spirit and the question of colors permeates our days: the spirit is blue, the sea red, and the salad coral at 11m...well, either yellow or green (you'll have to attend next year's event for some color on this one...).

In the photos:

Peter seems to be changing shades of pink as the days go by, a testament that the Sinai sun is a bit stronger than in Denmark. Although Peter has changed his usual pool lighting for the open air and sea of Egypt, it has not inhibited his performance in the Blue Hole...much to the contrary.

Stefano and Mozzi are showing their moves in other shades of blue while John stops to take some sun with Seb and Roland in front of the restaurant/classroom/lounge of the Buddha.

After hours, Sandor squints to ensure he's really seeing things clearly, while Jesper and Nathan discuss the paradigm shift going on in the realm of bubble rings...

...and Roland shows contentment after signing another sponsorship deal with Oakley.

Antics aside (of which there are many), we're continuing to learn from Will's unreal unassisted exploits and are looking forward to Peter and Frank in the coming days.

Well,
I just wanted to share my opinions about the Blue Spirit

First, I loved. I met a lot of people that feels the same about sea and freediving like me. I think this was the best part. The relaxed Dahab-style way of freediving. Now I have more freediving friends that share my passion. I want to thanks Roland for this experience, and also Will, Peter, Mozzy, Fred, Nathe and Jesper. It was a pleasure to meet you.

Second, It was very fruitful to discuss special topics and polemical issues of Freediving with Freedivers of different range of experience. All of this under a beautiful night sky in a local restaurant. It's not easy, at last for me, to find people to talk about it, specially of physiology. It was an enrichment experience.

And last but not the less. I really loved the Red Sea, I use to think that my island was the best place on earth for freediving. Not anymore...for me is Dahab.

Good luck to all of you

Sounds like a really great time you all had - thanks for posting the stories and the pics (say, who's is who in that last picture?). Sounds positively idyllic.

What is "e-diving?" and can you please tell us what other "special topics" in freediving were discussed?

Cheers and best,
maytag

Blue Spirit was amazing.

It was a great group of guys coming together to have some fun in the sun. We had some top guys giving us lectures without any attitude as you might expect the opposite from top athletes. And then there was the students, also top guys form around the world… Italy, UK, Denmark, New Zealand, Austria, Australia, France, Columbia, South Africa…. A multi national gathering of some great people. The diving was great… even if you dived 30 or 100.

Looking at guys like Will coming up from a 67m dive no fins without any effort made my head spin.. but then again if you had dedication like him then you would be able to dive that deep….

It was a great course and would recommend it to anyone.. thanks Roland for making this possible.

Some of the guys on course and lectures
Roland – they Scientist
John (Johnnyb)– Intellectual reporter
Jesper – Been there got the t-shirt
Fred ( Farid ) – Translator
Nathan (Watts) – Bubble Pooper aka Family man
Sandor – Always concurring
Stefano – Italian Stallion
Frank – Doctor C4
Will – No Sugar please
Peter – Mr Horny

In fact it was idyllic

What do you mean with e-diving (deeperblue?).

Special topic as deep narcosis, lung packing and many more while enjoying a delicious shark juice.

Wonderful time

FPernett,

Thanks for your elucidating post - the "e-diving" refers to Sebastien's earlier post (please see quote).

May good times continue for all.
Shark juice?!!? Are you serious? :friday

Cheers!

Wow what a trip. A month in Dahab Egypt being taught by some of the best freedivers in thier fields, from a monofin expert to one changing the way many people are choosing to dive (exhaling) , a Kiwi who knows his stuff and shows amazing focus and determination , a mild mannered Dr who will probably save many lives with his knowledge and insight , a swimmer who fine tuned technique and our perceptions on diving and last but not least a crazy Austrian who brought them/us all together for this event and experience teaching us that safety, technique, and time are the first things to think about and that the other things will come in time. To all those i met thank you on a great experience its one that i will never forget.

See you at Funny Mummy Nat

so that was it for this year.

i want to express my utmost respect and appreciation to everyone who made the effort to come over and contribute to the success of this event. if there is one thing i strive for it is quality over quantity and i say in that respect these 3 weeks far surpassed my expectations.

apart from everything i learnt there was this amazing spirit amongst everybody which really made this event special. what a bunch of cool guys you people are, i salute you :friday

i'll be contacting everyone for some feedback soon so the next years event will be of similar quality.

all the best to everyone, be safe and bubble on:D
