BlueSkunk Bubble Ring Challenge 2005

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Hi there.

Oh - having a camera wasn't enough - it didn't work. :-( Arghhhhhhh
So no entry from me this year....

The least I can do - is to state here my most favourite ones from those submitted.

1. OCTOPUS - for it's pure, Zen-Art-like approach :-)
2. TURTLE & APNEANNELIE & HERBERT - all are nice (if there is no ring-cut in Herbert's picture I would give him 2nd place just for himself. ;-)

Even I wasn't lucky enough to take part, thanks a lot for announcing this competition - at least I have learn how to blow them. :-)

Thanx

Petr

the thread is closed now, no more entries will be considered.

a follow-up thread with a poll will be posted in the next 2 days where everyone can vote their favourites.

stay tuned!

thanks for participating, everybody. you represent the true spirit of freediving which makes you role-models of the highest order. :)

respect!

1st place - Herbert - I love the background of trees and sky, and the sun hitting the edge of the ring.

2nd place - Turtle - Like the idea that he's going to dive through the ring, clear colors as well

3rd place - immerlustig (Two very nice concentric circles)

competition aside, has anyone figured out how bubblerings work?
When I get a really good one, it looks like its whirling around, and almost completely stops its rise to demise.
My best guess is that the surface area becomes so large that friction stops the upward movement. if true, a REALLY BIG ring would stop and never die!

:) Here is my take:

A bubble ring is affected mainly by a combination of buoyancy, air pressure, water pressure, water surface tension, and friction. The friction is actually between the water molecules as they are forced to move out of the way of the water molecules being pushed into them by the bubble. The bubble will have a film of water surrounding it of water molecules with higher tension to each other and these are what push the other water molecules due to the force of the bouyancy. This film is actually what is trapping the air molecules into the unified form they maintain. This film has fairly consistent tension distributed around its surface.

Now, picture a big bubble floating up and near the top center it encounters an board. What do you expect? The bubble will be reshaped and likely divide into two bubbles. It will resist this division and if you are not centered enough it could pull the smaller half over with the larger half due to the tension. If it divides it is because the board induced a higher area of tension at the area it interacts with the bubble. The bouyancy force continued to exert upwards and the water molecules release their hold on the bubble form, essentially tear the film. Now take that same picture and apply it to the idea of the bubble hitting a flat surface of water caused by the inability to move enough water out of the way fast enough because the bubble's surface area had grown so large. The same action of reshaping would occur. The bouyancy force would overcome the force blocking it by causing increased tensions at points in the bubble and smaller portions of the bubble would push onward able to move smaller portions of water out of the way. Picture the whole bubble finding a straw like route to stream out through. But due to the tension it would only do this to the amount required to overcome the friction. So, it would not do this in one stream and indefinately, it would just reshape and divide as necessary.

At the end of the day if the surface area got to a significant enough point that the unified bubbles buoyancy could not overcome, then the bubble would just reshape to overcome it or disintegrate to degrees that would allow the air to proceed. So, no indefinite standstill bubblerings allowed.

Anyhow, without much attempt to make that clean or concise, that is my idea of why it would not happen.

Cheers,

Tyler

Unaware i was of your expertise in this field, Dr. Z.

I am delighted to welcome you to Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics (J. Phys. B), a significant new forum for optical, atomic and molecular physics, with quantum optics and ultracold atomic physics at the core of bubble-ring research.

May a fruitful cooperation lead to solving some of the remaining mysteries of the known universe.

Sincerely,

Dr. R.

Yes, Dr. R, you are an integral area of my expertise! Most may not have derived it from my explanation but I am glad you caught on that I was referring to you when I mention the nature of large surface areas and buoyancy. ;)

It is my honor to finally be accepted into the prestigious J. Phys. B. :D Let this be the first of many great published works, that has been accepted without peer-review. ;)

And just to satisfy the mass appreciation of my work, let me emphasize there is even more at work in bubblerings than I mentioned. ie. vortexes, non-uniform motion of water column, water temperature, inertia, etc...

Sincerely,

Dr. Who... I mean Dr. Z

Well, this year's contest closed just three weeks ago (see links below), so I doubt there will be another before 2007. Looks like you missed the train departure by just very little :)
