Bournemouth Spearos

This is a good thread.

I have snorkelled around the big stone groynes at sandbanks for years and have seen bass and mullet around the metal posts at the ends of the groynes. Also i have seen loads of mullet in the shallows to the right of shell bay at studland and managed to get close to them without taking any particular care of how much noise i was making.

Has anybody had much just pottering around the groynes and studland?

I've fished both those areas and seen what you have seen.

Watch out for boat traffic around there though, especially as you get closer to the harbour entrance (which is deadly!)

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum & looking at starting spearing this year in the mornings before work (we opened a new dive shop in Wimborne).

Living in Bournemouth but know the coast very well down to Portland from scuba diving.

Where are the spearos around here now?

There are a group of us that spearfish together under the banner of the Wessex Spearfishing Club, once the season gets underway. We usually meet up up one evening a week to go spearfishing (Tuesday or Wednesday, as yet to be decided for this year), and this will probably start to happen again some time in May.

All local spearos are welcome to tag along, and we usually meet up in the pub afterwards and tell each other lies about what we saw, over a couple of drinks.

I've noticed that over the last year or so more and more spearos seem to be cropping up in the Bournemouth area, so I thought I'd start a thread to get to know you all a bit and try and take more advantage of local buddies and the coast between Hengistbury Head and Old Harry!

I've been spearfishing for a few years now, but the vast majority of my diving has been done around Weymouth and Portland, mainly due to the knowledge and location of my buddy Glowworm. I have visited the piers a few times, but other than that, my experience of 'my own back garden' is pretty limited.

This year I'd like to make the most of being 10mins from the sea and try and get some after work, early morning, night and any other type of dives in, as well as still getting over to Weymouth and Portland to dive with all the guys I've met through this site, Portland Oceaneering and spearo BBQs.

I've also met a skipper who runs a charter boat from Poole Quay, who used to be on the GB spearfishing team, and is more than willing to take groups out to dive. After getting me in the right place to catch a 14lb bass this summer (with a rod), as well as loads of Black Bream the year before, I'd be interested to get some tips from him!

I'm Patryk and I am Jack's mate. I'm a scubadiver and freediver focust on spearfishing with no tank of corse Open sea spearfishing is new for me and I hope to have some good time learning it here.
