What the report suggests isn't that there is no adaptation to hyprcapnia, but the duration of that adaptation is short-term. That Tom and Tanya were able to do no better than untrained individuals WITHOUT WARMUP suggests that the adaptation is transitory. You do CO2 tables and you decrease your sensitivity to CO2. There's no question we adapt. The question is "does the adaptation last over several hours or days?". The duration may be similar to the expression of red blood cells as a part of the diving reflex. The spleen starts removing the extra red cells within 10 minutes after the last breathhold.
