Huzit everyone! That dive sounds lekker, Lenny!

Quick question to everyone (I've just posted it in another thread, but I'll stick it here as well): What fish have you seen between hout bay and blouberg? Obviously lots of Hotties, but what else? Anything big and exciting? Would be keen to hear!

Couple of spots to get a Gallie between Llandudno and Bakoven (although most are now reserve),otherwise in the kelp at Melkbos for a Cob,Stump or Steenbras at the right time.
 
Hey guys another question:

Is the shark shield supposed to shock the !@#$ out of you! Flip, i switched it on for about 3 seconds and then could not bare it anymore!

Went for my first dive at buffels on saturday, i went in a bit late so the south easter had picked up and the water was getting murkier and rougher. Did really get anything worth reporting, swam with some seals, lots of jellyfsh and I saw a huge cuttlefish which was quite cool. Some other guys went in at the same time and came out the same time but they dived further south down the coast, they shot huge Gallie (like competion winners!) anyways I guess you gotta know the spots.

so sounds like this weekend is out. What about the atlantic side?
 
Are you in the water when you switch it on ? If so,you may sometimes feel a very weak "pulse",but it in no way should shock you.
But if you're out the water and the tail earths into the water,prepare for a good "klap".Have jumped into the boat a few times without having switched it off,hard lesson to learn :martial
 
Well I bought Miles' unit which I think is the scuba unit. But I was told by Louis and another Spearo I met that, there are a lot of spearos that use the scuba unit.

I think perhaps the problem might be that the one electrode (a plate) is strapped in the hollow of my back which is out of the water (I think) when I am on the surface, so perhaps i getting that earthing effect you spoke about. I'm just not sure what to do about it?
 
Before I got my Freedom 4 I borrowed that same unit (Freedom 3 ?) from a friend and didn't have any problem.
Although,even with the new unit when I duckdive I stick the leg without the unit on out the water otherwise you do get a jolt.

Spear-fishing buddy(s) needed
My brother will be in Struisbaai from 07 October to 22 October 2008 and he is looking for some spear-fishing buddy(s) to join him. He is renting a house by the harbour for his honeymoon and it will be him and his wife. He is an accomplished spearo with many years experience and Cat-C qualified skipper. He will be using my boat, a 17ft Kosi Cat with 2 x 50HP Yamaha’s. He has enough spear-fishing gear for 2-3 spearo’s. He knows the spots in that area very well. Unfortunately he moved to Mpumalanga many years ago and has no connections in the Cape anymore. All he is looking for is some spearo’s that can dive with and help with the boat. Make contact with me an i will put you in touch with him, as he is not a member of this forum yet. Unfortunately i'm not in SA and cant join him. Thanks
PS: He is a super cool dude, funny as hell and never turns down an opportunity to spear no matter how dismal the conditions.
 
Hi guys, hows the diving been going. Im still on my dry spell as Im busy starting my own bussiness so have to work on weekends and I have to spend time with the family so the water is in the backburner for now.:crutch:blackeye

Although I don't know how he is going pull it off. If I took my speargun with me on honeymoon I think my wife would of used it on me! :blackeyerofl (we where actually in mossel baai-not a bad place to dive)
 
Yes i can think that spearfishing on honeymoon could be a problem, but she is a very nice girl and they match up good. Good news is my work changed my leave so i will be flying to SA for the wedding and also be in Struisbaai. That will give him more time with the new wife and i will dive. Please send me a private mail with your contact details. I will keep you updated on movements and the sea conditions. Another friend of mine that i met on the forum will also join for a dive. Needless to say i cant wait.

I'm a Gauteng freediver (1 of 3 in existence) and I'm finally moving down to Cape Town on Monday. I'd really dig to dive with any spearos or freedivers in Cape Town. If you don't mind me tagging along on your dives or need a flesh buoy to attach your fish to please PM me!

Hey John, good to hear that you moving down to sunny CPT. Don't judge it right away cos we are having a particularily horrible weather at the moment. But I'm sure that after living here for a while you will never be able to live in Joeys again

Where in Capetown are you going to live and when are your free days (the days you can dive)? Most guys here hook up with other divers near them who can dive on the same days. The best place to meet diving buddies is probally Bellville underwater club. It's the most active out of the clubs in the cape. Then there is also Falsebay and the Huegenoote.

I stay in Monte Vista (Northern suburbs), and usually dive on mondays and sometimes sundays or saturdays (depending on work). Cool but hope to meet you in person this summer, I think its going to be a good one.:friday

P.S. we dont keep our fish on us in CapeTown, cos there are these guys in grey suits we call em neptunes taxmen, anyways, they don't let you get away with such things.rofl
 
shit...a flesh bouy sounds enticing! im thinking rooikrans...summer..yellowtail....you can be the decoy...you prefer wearing rump or sirloin? rofl
 
I took a drive around the Strand, Rooiels Hermanus road over the weekend. it was dirty windy cold and damp....looking forward to the Summer. As far as I can see, the start date for the Kreef season isn't published yet but should be around the 15th. (a Saturday!)

I met three guys diving kreef on the outside of the Hermanus harbour wall on Sunday!!? :rcard I asked them about the regulations there. They didn't know that you needed "permission" to dive for crays!! oh yeah:head. their bugs were all undersize as well. their gear was all new, so perhaps they are really that green.
 
Kit upgrade 1.Fins

Just been checking out my gear (wife and kid are on holiday in Europe) so the lounge is mine and looks great covered in wetsuits and stuff!

Tonight I’ve been servicing zips and checking the equipment. All looks pretty good except the engines. All my fins have miles on them (and meters) and need to go. In the 80s I bought fantastic Cressi Longaras which were great in Maputaland and other blue water places. They gave up after 17 years of hard work(closed heel). I thought of getting a new pair. But then common sense kicked in and as usual complicated a simple descision.

I mainly (80%) do shore entries and am seldom in open water apart from crossing from a kelp bed to another.
Here in the Cape I have had open heel fins.
1.- so I can have decent booties to walk over rocks, barnacles and other etceteras and
2.. the shorter fins are great in the kelp.

Time to decide. Long fins or short? Open heel or closed? I’m interested in your experiences. What do you prefer and why. Are there any decent booties that fit closed heels? I have taped up my clips on the open heeled so the buoy line doesn’t tangle. Close heel fins are impossible to fix when they go. Clips on open heeled fins are getting harder to find replacement parts for...you get the pic.

What brands you have and your experiences are interesting too. Colours are of significance apparently (yellow combo black are interesting to sharks.)Then I see that many you guys use shark shields...never crossed my mind. Should I be looking at one of those? How on earth do you stop those things from getting caught in the kelp? Diving used to be so simple in the old days – less rules too! (bigger crays and more fish too)
